Will most E6600's do 3.6Ghz?

My case is an Antec 900 and the new Thermaltake V1 so I don't think heat is an issue. Im currently running an E6300 at 2.8Ghz@400fsb with shitty dell xps ram and I just want to get a E6600 and run it at 400FSB like im doing now but with good CL4 ram.. like Ballistix or something. My main question is, can most E6600's do 3.6 @ 400fsb? or are they a dime a dozen. Your input is appreciated. :)

Than again.. wonder if I can get my e6300 to 3.5 @ 500fsb with better ram. But than my DS3's overclockability will play a roll, I think my cooling is effective + fan on the MCH. Should I just buy this http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1201730 and go from there? my e6300 is a SL9SA with the L626A stepping let me know your thoughts guys i'll prob order the ram in the morning depending on the responses in this thread.

Understanding , overclocking is about luck. You may get a chip that does 3.6, you may get a chip that only doe 3.2 etc etc. You can't really say "Yes" to this question, because it's impossible to say so.
Its all about luck and your setup.

Nobody can give a official answer since it's the luck of the draw. Be grateful if you can run it above the stock speeds ;)

Depends on the batch your processor came from. In general, 3.6Ghz seems to be the mainstream high-end holy grail for E6600 procs. It's not considered an extreme speed, but it's by no means guaranteed achievable. If you reach 3.6ghz w/o issue, then you've lucked out with a good chip. If not, don't assume your chip is a lemon, as many E6600's don't scale quite that high.

Remember that every chip is different, and as such, every chip has different limits.

Mark.

not all will do it, mine tops out about 3.4ghz, and i run it 3.0 24/7 because of FSB issues with all 4 banks of ram populated. Also the earlier 6600 seem better on average than the present day ones.

ya, like the previous poster mentioned, it seems to be the older e6600 chips that can do 3.6ghz or higher. I know ith mine the limit is 3.4ghz and that took alot of work just to get it there (it was stuck at 3.32ghz for a while) But in the end its just luck of the draw, who know mabey the newest chips they release will be good overclockers as well.

best bet is to see what stepping E6600 tankguys are selling,

I went for a 629F and it was worth the extra $20 bucks.

Lawl. Gotta remember, you have to also have a good motherboard.

Good mobo + good ram + good batch on cpu = overclocking goodness

Its all about luck. I mean some people get great overclocking chips, and some...dont.

There should be a thread for the "noobies" and overclocking for understanding how overclocking works.

I bet there are a lot of people who just up the voltages and think its stable and run as is.

Because Im noticing a lot of repeated threads asking the same questions. Valis questions for beginners but a lil bit of research / searching around "googling" will give you all your answers.. FYI :) <333

Trust me, im far from a newb when it comes to overclocking, I was asking a general question, do a majority of e6600's clock to 3.6? its like asking if a majority of the 2500+ bartons clocked to 3200+ speeds which they did. Simple question

And obviously in this situation a good motherboard and ram is the least of the worries as most motherboards will do 400FSB which is all thats needed to get to 3.6 with a e6600.

hmm to reach 3.5ghz, Ive noticed 1.45 and 1.5 vcore to be the trick.

But then again also been seeing 3.2ghz wall @ 1.4vcore. so its all the simple fact
"do you have a good batched cpu"

good luck on your overclock. :)

I'm going to go ahead and say that most of the E6600s will be able to reach 3.6GHz. If you look at the database, the average E6600 speed is about 3450 at 1.4594V. I had a hard time getting my E6600 (not yet in the database) to 3.6GHz, but I finally got it at 1.55V

I think if you are willing to put the time and effort into really working on it, that 3.6 is achievable.

3.6 looks like its only attainable safely with the older batches... but im pretty much guaranteed 3.5 with this e6300 I have... im happy with that since I bought this cpu for less than 100 bucks :) thanks for the replies guys, its appreciated :)

I still say people are being unusually pessimistic. there is a very wide range of weeks at or above 3.6Ghz, and since we are only talking about what MOST E6600s are capable, i think you should be upset if it only runs a little higher than stock.

Read this before flaming me...

if your E6600 tops out at 2.8GHz, (400MHz overclock) then you are worst than most E6600s and thus you could have reason to be upset. If yours ONLY hits 3.2 or 3.4 well you got ALMOST a 1GHz overclock which was pretty much unheard of until core 2s came around. People used to be very happy overclocking their 1.83GHz Bartons to 2.2GHz. I think most opteron users were very happy with about a 500-600MHz overclock. The core 2s are awesome overclockers and it is alright to expect good results

mine only goes to 3 ghz, its one of the newer batches
just use a regular HSF, it doesn't even get hot.

I would guess that with some increased voltages you could do better than 3 GHz (Although 3GHz is FAST. In fact an E6600 at 3GHz scored the same as my E6300 at 3.5GHz in SuperPi. Both did 1M in 16.500s ). What is your stepping if you don't mind me asking?

I've already tried 1.5~1.6 voltage, cpu still runs cool to the touch still won't pass ortho.
I have gskill 800 "good" ram. Have tried upping all voltages including motherboard and ram, still nothing, Have dropped multipliers, dropped ram timings to 5-5-5-15, still not stable past 3ghz.
I have a p5k vanilla motherboard. All power saving cpu features disabled of course.

What are your temps like in software like everest, coretemp, ThermalAnalysisTool? My heatsink was cool to the touch for a while too, and i figured out it was because the heat was not transferring well and my cpu was getting hot and my heatsink staying cool (which is not what you want)

I don't remember the numbers but they were high in software while in bios they were cooler than room temperature. I have a scythe infinity so it's impossible to remove without taking out the mobo. Unless you had a super small hand or something.

have to say my week 30 6600 will do 3.6 with a tiny bump in volts upto 1.37v with 1.5v thru it can hit 4ghz never went any higher as im on air but with stock volts i can run @ 3.4ghz and keep my temps under control.
i do think the earlier weeks seems to overclock better my mates 6600 bought 2 weeks ago cant go above 3.4 even with 1.55v thru the core, so i would think with this whole sample of 2 cpu's lol earlier weeks seem to be better but as guys before have said milage varies

If the average overclock was 3450 then you are not guaranteed to hit 3.6 at all.

If anything, you have a 50/50 chance of hitting 3.6ghz. Personally, I think the early to mid week cpu's usually have the best overclocking results. The first 15 weeks or so are basically unsellable. But the same engineers refine the processes and so if you wait a few months out to buy a cpu, those are the best overclockers. Once the process matures, they probably shift those engineers to the next chip or next generation chip and get some lower ranked engineers to keep up production of the current cpu lineup which causes overall overclockability to suffer a little due to less rigorous production line inspections being performed.

Mine does 3.6 on water .....but I needed 1.5 volts to do it.

its as stable as can be though, so I'm pretty happy with it...I'm sure I could get more, but I don't see the need yet:)

mine does 3.6 but then again, that is at 1.56v under water..... My e6400 does 3.8 at the same volts..... go figure.
