Will Ivy Bridge work with Sandy Bridge Mobo's? I'm debating between getting an M17x (move between 3 homes on a daily basis) or a desktop this go around, and one of the things that will make or break my decision is if I can pump the money I save into an Ivy Bridge CPU and 28nm GPU when the time comes without needing a new mobo.

Leaked intel slides show that ivy bridge will be compatible with the current cougar point (P67, H67, Z68 etc) range of PCH chips and we have seen screenshots of an ivy bridge engineering sample running on a P67 board.

What is not so clear is whether BIOS updates will be needed to use the final ivy bridge CPUs and if so which board will actually get those updates.

most boards will need updates, they usually do.

the Asrock Z68 Professional is the only MB out on the market that clearly states its ivy bridge compatible as its required to use its PCI-E 3.0 features.

If I'm not mistaken, the mainstream chip will use 1155, but the enthusiast which will come later will use 2011. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's how they're going to roll them out.

Ivy bridge will be a drop in replacement for Sandy Bridge. Worst case scenario is that you have to update your BIOS. Google "intel tick tock"
