Will I need to replace my 850W for something else?

Hey all,

In my upcoming superbuild, I'm planning on running a 5960X with two Fury X's. I currently have a 850W Silverstone 80+ Silver PSU. Upon looking at specs for the Fury X's, their stated draw is 275W-350W whereas the CPU has a TDP of 140W.

Am I doing this calc right? Let's assume I want to overclock as I'm running a water loop. By my logic 350*2 + 140 = 840W which means with my video cards at full bore and a stock CPU will basically be running my existing PSU at 98%. If I OC the CPU, I may be pushing that higher.

Should I upgrade?

Upgrade, you are going to be right on the limit for that power supply. Plus everything else in the system adds up to 30W+ for RAM, motherboard, drives, and USB devices.

EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2!
BTW why are you investing ing Fury Xs when Polaris/Pascal are releasing so soon?

I got them for super cheap in August. Have been building this thing since then.

I'm thinking I might go 1300G2 just to be on the safe side.

I guess I'll be the contrarian. Here's a review by Guru2D showing power consumption with one Fury X (they used a 5960x for their system as well):
AMD Radeon R9 Fury X review

They calculated 294W for a Fury X stressed and at 100% load. They recommend a quality 600W PSU for a single Fury X, and a quality 850W PSU for Fury X Crossfire. Higher if you plan to OC. I tend to agree with their assessment. You don't need a 1300W PSU. A PSU will only supply what the system asks for (I only say this because there are literally people who think that higher wattage PSUs directly make their systems faster by automatically supplying more power).

Your current PSU is adequate if you don't plan to OC much. If it's not adequate, you'll know because your system will power down or reboot when you load both GPUs.
