Will C2D E8400 support ECC with the right motherboard?

I'm thinking about getting an open box Super Micro motherboard from NewEgg that will support my E8400 and it also says it has ECC memory support.

Do I need to use a Xeon process or will the ECC memory be supported even with my E8400?

Thanks!

ECC memory is only dependent on the mobo, not the CPU. you'll be fine with that e8400. in the wolfdale family, the only difference between desktop chips and xeon chips is the testing standards, otherwise the e3110 (xeon) and the e8400 (desktop) is exactly the same.

ECC support depends on the memory controller. In the case of Core 2 CPUs, the controller is built into the northbridge, so you just need a chipset that supports both ECC and the CPU you want to use.

I am pretty sure all the intel chipsets that support the core 2 will support ecc, but it's been a long time since I checked so you might want to check out the specs, but yeah it's 100% dependent on the mobo/chipset, not the cpu in that case.

umm... where did you hear this? most intel chipsets don't support ECC.

Hrmm that may be true but I though I had seen ECC options in my board at home. I might be confusing the options from my server though (S3000AH running a C2D).

EDIT: looks like you are right, p35/45/etc dont support ecc. That's pretty lame, when did they stop supporting ecc on desktop chipsets? I remember the 440BX supported it and stuff, ha that was a long time ago..

The 815 didn't. That was my last board before the P35. 440BX may well be the last desktop chipset that supported ECC.
