Intel was hurting badly with the Netburst/P4 debacle and only their massive financial reserves and excellent marketing department (which got them into the mess in the first place) got them out of it. AMD's CPUs right now are hardly P4-level failures and will do just fine. Heck, even Kyle liked the X3 for a gaming box, which says a lot, as he isn't the person to sugar coat anything *g*
IMO AMD has never left the stage and is just doing what it does best: supply the mainstream market with mainstream chips, while not ignoring the budget market either. Intel has got little to contribute to those markets other than some rapidly ageing chips.
