Will 650w Do the Job?

I'm currently running an C2D e6600 alongside a BFG 285 OC+ w/ an Antec 650w PSU. I'm looking to replace the aging processor to better compliment the new GPU. If I were to drop a Q9650 in there, would I also have to drop coin on a new PSU, or would the TruePower Trio 650w be capable of supporting the draw? I intend to OC the new proc, so I'm thinking I'll have to grab something with a little more beef (850w or something similar) but if the 650w can do the job, all the better. If I do need a replacement, can anyone suggest a top shelf modular PSU with enough juice to do the job?

650 should be more than enough.

Hoping so. I'm a little retarded when it come to judging the capability of power supplies - I tend to go too high end, afraid I'll run into problems if I shoot too low (see e6600 w/ 650w PSU =P). I have no intention of going SLI with the system (mobo doesn't support it). This will basically be the wall for this system, any additional upgrades will require a total rebuild. If I can avoid buying a new PSU, that would be most excellent. Thanks for the reply!

650W is absolutely enough. Hell, even twice your power requirements would still be under that amount.

Really? Wow. What ungodly hardware configuration actually justifies the purchase of a 1000w PSU? ... not that I intend to buy one, just curious.

Thanks for the replies, btw. Good to know the ol' 650w is more than enough.

I have a lot of stuff in my machine :
GTX 285
Q6600 OC to 3.06Ghz
8GB of 1066 Ram
9 7200RPM Drives
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio Card
2 120mm fans
2 80mm fans
DVD-RW

and I peak at 400watts at 100% load using the APC PowerShute monitoring software. I have the Antec TP Trio 650 as well.

An overclocked high-end quad with at least three high-end GPUs and some HDs would be getting there. Some dedicated multi-GPU Folding@Home boxes also approach those levels.

I just plugged another GTX 285 into my rig, and the 650 watt couldn't handle it. Itll run for awhile, but once it gets hot and the efficiency drops, it'll shut down.

You will be fine with one GPU, but not two.

That's because you're using one of the old mediocre 650W BFG PSUs from before Jon took over and they started putting out real quality products. If you had a better 650W PSU, it would be able to handle that no problem, especially considering the fact that you're running a dual-core CPU.

Rig in Sig is running a TP Trio 650w.

More than enough to handle a GTX285 and a Quad.
