Gas Powered Games has canceled its Wildman Kickstarter after failing to reach its $1.1 million goal.

"I've been working in the background to find other ways to keep Gas Powered Game running," Taylor said in the latest video update that announced the crowdfunding cancellation. "If it wasn't for all of the hard work and the passion and the support [on Kickstarter] that I've seen this last month, I would not be in a position to be looking at some of the opportunities that we've got today."

If you cancel a project in Kickstarter, do you get to keep the money?

Considering this is the death of his company it is kind of sad ... I know there were a lot of gamers criticizing Taylor for his previous games but I thought this was an interesting idea ... the only downside to these barrages of KS titles though is I have a limited budget I can throw at these things ... although I would like to see an alternative to the publisher system we have now

Supreme commander was great. But he shat all over that franchise with supreme commander 2.

^Nope. Funds aren't sent right away anyways, so if a company doesn't meet their goal, no money is exchanged.

hard to do a project if you don't have access to the money to do them, isn't it?

You aren't suppose to set up kick starter with hopes of money right off the bat. It's only to cover expenses down the road. You shouldn't expect money right away.

Well, I think this is the quandary some of the established developers are finding themselves in when they come to KS with new projects ... if you are small (just a couple of people) then you can use KS to fund your development (but you will need to keep your requirements very small - tens of thousands or low hundreds at best)

If you are big and needing "big bucks" (in the millions) then you need to have other existing sources of revenue to keep your development house open and you have to make a REALLY good sales pitch and you have to be a known entity ... it is unlikely that people are going to hand out millions to a complete unknown

One of the hardest parts of KS is that you either need lots of supporters (since majority of givers are at the lower levels) or you will need to hand out tons of swag (which subtracts out of your development budget) ... we also haven't had one of the big projects go to full term yet after funding so we don't know what will happen if people get burned on a crappy game or even worse, one that goes belly up

It should be interesting to see how the whole KS model plays out long term ... it could be a paradigm shift or just a blip in game development ... too early to tell :)

I thought kickstarter was primarily for enterprising young startups who need something akin to venture capital to get their idea out there, not for companies who have already developed products over the years and just want someone else to foot the bill for R&D.

His KS cash plan didn't work out. I like "pre-purchasing" (oh right, "fund" their projects) via KS, but this once really didn't inspire me at all.

In that case they should change the name of their site name from Kickstarter.com to CarrotOnAStick.com

Gas Powered Games is almost bankrupt. They probably don't have much cash on hand. If I was them I would do a humble bundle thing THQ did.

GPG used to be one of my favourite developers but they haven't made a good game in half a decade. They've lost touch.

Knew this KS was going to fail, they made a lot of their staff redundant a few days after they started the kickstarter. That's a great way to scare people off.

Guess it depends on your definitions ... if it was EA or Activision asking for money then I would agree it is not optimal (and I doubt their request would succeed anyway) ... But the development houses like DoubleFine and Obsidian work for other people's money already ... they wouldn't have sufficient capital to build a big AAA title without publisher investment (and those publishers bring all kinds of Faustian bargains with them) ... I don't have a problem with the developers taking their projects directly to the people, especially when they are too small or too niche to interest a publisher

If you want to do a project needing more than a few million you still have to make your Faustian deal with the publishers or have some VC money to back you up ... but for projects less than that (since those projects are too small to interest publishers) I think KS could provide a nice alternative to shelving projects until you can find VC investors or by some miracle come into a windfall on one of your publisher backed projects ;)

I would like to preface this by saying that I'm a huge Forged Alliance/Total Annihilation fan.

Chris, we love some of your games but it's time to cool out and quit getting upset and lashing out at things. The fact is that people do love some of your games and the Planetary Annihilation kickstarter went crazy. That was the project you should have been leading. However you haven't been keen to listen to the people who really love your games. As a result you've alienated a lot of your fanbase and so here you are, without funding for a new game that frankly doesn't get a lot of us excited. It's sad, but that's the way it is. I don't know why you had to sell the IP to Supreme Commander. But here you are, and it's time to move on.
