The new search engine from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is set to go live today. Is anyone actually interested in a new search engine? I mean, doesn’t it seem like we have a ton to choose from already?

However, people who give the search engine a test drive on Monday shouldn't expect a Google killer, because they will be looking at a project that is at a very early stage and will need participation from volunteers to grow and be refined, Wales said.

Am I interested in a new search engine?

Oh, yes.

Google has become an ad-infested mess these days. 90% of the hits are "Buy it Here" hits instead of good information.

Search for reviews on something, and out of 10,000 hits maybe 2% will actually be reviews. The rest are sites with carefully crafted headers wanting you to BUY it there. Most have empty "review" sections.

I've been trying to use Ask.com more, just to do my part in competing with Google. I really liked Google when it was created, but nowadays I'm worried our galaxy might someday be renamed.

I also feel the same way. I love Google but there are too many store-results when searching, even if I go out of my way to pinpoint what I'm looking for.

I have to agree. I can't find anything on Google anymore, except yet another place to buy whatever I'm looking for. There was a time that no matter what I typed in I'd get a link to E-Bay for it and nothing else worth looking at.

It's seriously lame to even try and look now. And yet it seems like other search engines don't offer much better sometimes. I think another search engine that actually looks for topical information rather than webstore crap would be very very helpful. I don't care what it's called and I don't care if Google makes another search engine that does it. I just want something I can use to actually find things relevant to my search.

i think the guys at wiki should worry about fixing the god-aweful search engine in wikipedia first
