Hello, I am just wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper upscaler. Reason being, I bought a 24" westinghouse monitor and it's 480p scaling is unbearable. It's so blurry and It's nauseating so could anyone recommend an upscaler for me? it is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!! :D

I don't think theres such a thing as a cheap upscaler. Stand alone upscalers are usually in the thousands as they are made for professional use versus home. A home theater receiver might be your best bet, but I'm thinking it will cost at least $300 for something like an onkyo that can upscale. Maybe find something used on ebay?

Getting a HDTV/EDTV might be a better option. Not too many monitors with good upscaling.

I just bought an Onkyo TX-SR605 ($450) and it has a hidden menu that lets you upscale to 720p. I'm using my Wii component cable and set the Wii to 480p. When I first got my 52" TV with the Wii plugged straight into it the jaggies were very pronounced but with the upscaling receiver they're been reduced quite a bit but you'll never be able to completely get rid of them since that's just the Wii's lack of hardware capabilities.

I'm satisfied, though. The upscaling did help and there's no lag. Shoot me a PM if you get this receiver. It's got a secret menu and you need to adjust the brightness setting in the receiver a bit but it's fine after that.

Gefen makes a few discrete, cheaper scalers which might be of help. Alas, you get what you pay for...

I must be out of the loop, care to elaborate on how you access this function on the SR605? ;)

I've got the SR605 and djoyle's right.
To access the menu - hold down "AUX" and hit power.
To make all 480p sources display at 720p - just hit the right arrow and it'll confirm that you're upscaling to 720p. Hit enter and you're done.
That receiver can be had for about $350 if you look. If you don't mind getting an open boxed item, you might see it for $300.
The upscaler isn't amazing, but it makes the Wii look a ton better and I'm not seeing any input lag. If anything, it has less than than running it at 480p.
Anyway - that's a great receiver for anyone in the market. HDMI input/output, Dolby HD, DTS-HD, PCM 7.1, 720p upscaling, 3 optical inputs, 2 coax inputs, 7.1 multi-in, and it's also very easy to use.
For gamers who want a good home theater that won't break the bank - it's among the best you can get.

That's a nice list of features. Almost makes me want to upgrade from my Yamaha 5830. My yamaha is pretty no frills but it still works fine. The HDMI in/out is very tempting. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've had mine for a year and I honestly only have VERY minor complaints. You can't rename the inputs. While that's a VERY tiny gripe, it's kind of lame that I can't rename "DVD/LD" to "Wii" like you can with a lot of other ones. Obviously it would be nice if it did a 1080p upscale, but 720p is more than enough. Considering the only item I have that isn't outputting 1080i or 1080p is the Wii - who cares, right? Other than that - it's killer.

That's exactly how I feel.

With that hidden menu you can make some picture adjustments as well, for the Wii (component) I had to reduce the brightness and I did it with the settings in the receiver. While you can adjust display properties from the receiver it doesn't appear to affect HDMI devices but only analog connections.

I had setup my television's display for the HDMI devices I had and it looked great but the Wii (component) and PS2 (component) looked too bright and I didn't want to have to adjust the television so I played with the brightness on the receiver and got those systems looking great, I went to see if it affected the 360 and it appears to have no affect so I'm very happy with that.

It seems like that hidden menu is solely for the upscaler so when you mess with the settings it only affects the devices being upscaled.

I wonder if my SR674 has this hidden fearure cause I sometimes let my 6 & 4 year old boys play SSBB on my setup with their Wii.

I'll take 1080i over 720p for television on a 1080p TV any day :)

Well, my LCD projector is 720p native so will stick with that for now but even when I do get one that does 1080p I don't think I would choose 1080i over 720p because I think I would rather have progressive scan over higher resolution and interlaced image. From what I have read, unless you have a large screen people have a hard time telling the dif between 720p and 1080p. I'll take progressive scan FTW.
