Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is predicting that console sales numbers for May will be…*drum roll*…the same as they have been for months. The Wii will once again be on top with 400,000 units sold, followed by the Xbox 360 at 225,00 and the PS3 pulling up the rear with 100,000.

With regard to hardware sales, Pachter estimates sell-through of 400,000 Wii, 225,000 Xbox 360, and 100,000 PS3 systems - predicting that Nintendo's next-generation console will outsell Sony's by a factor of 4:1.

Well that certainly takes a lot of balls. Can't he predict something interesting for once?

Bound to happen most likely. Finally they are starting to predict more accurately. :)

Its just been dominating and selling faster every month it seems like.

Considering how long the 360 has been out, I think the 360 is doing pretty well if it sells half the number of wii's.

I think the 360 still is the clear winner, they have been selling an incredible amount of consoles despite being out for so much longer than the other consoles.

I wonder what the effect of 60% of their employee's bailing out will have on the console?

Personally, I think they're catching a TON of new buyers from the people who were saying "Eh, I'm gonna wait and see what the PS3 is gonna be like..." Most (as far as I see it) of those more committed gamers aren't the type to pay Sony's exorbitant price for a console, and they're not exactly the Zelda and Wii Sports types, either.

its just marketing
and they opeted out when asked to move to CA
and like the Wii needs a lot of marketing any way

But with more money!

It still amazing how those numbers reversed themselves with this generation of consoles. SONY has to have been shocked with the reversal. Is the Wii still hard to find?

Yeah... very interesting reversal :D

And yes the Wii is still hard to find. You have to go find out when they get stock as it still sells out quickly (and it's not because each store stock few units.)

In other news... there's rumors of the xbox 360 core selling for $199 :)

If you line up all the consoles as if they had launched on the same day this is what it would look like (eg, this is comparing their launch sales, by "moving" the 360's launch data ahead by X number of months to line up with the Wii and PS3):

The 360 is NOT the clear winner, it was just launched first.

The Wiis are still a bit difficult to find but what I've found with Target is they typically don't put them on the shelves for Sunday ads.

I went in Sunday around 12:30 and they still had four units left. None on the shelf you just needed to ask for one.

As for the 360 I'm not surprised to much by the sales numbers now, this is the time period in which most consoles start to hit its stride. There is a good amount of content and you can find games for sub $30. All of that adds up to be a winner.

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php...&reg2=America&cons3=X360&reg3=America&align=1

While we can all debate the quality of vgchartz. They all show the same trend when you align the launches. About 50-60 weeks into the launch there is an uptick in sales.

The scary thing is the XB and 360 have the same exact trending so far.

Just my two cents.

Again, my theory of "price = ranking" is holding true:

$249 = First
$399 = Second
$599 = Third

..and I think it will stay that way.

The 360 is NOT the clear winner, it was just launched first.

Huh!?!?!?!

11 million Xbox 360 consoles compared to 7.5 million Wii and 3.2 million PS3s...it is hard to say that the Xbox 360 isn't ahead.

If console sales STAY THE SAME as they are now, it will take 21 months for the Wii to catch up to the Xbox 360.

learn to comprehend...

In the same period since launch the Wii has sold almost double what the 360 did.

What would be hilarious is if they had a similar chart, but instead of units sold over the same period of time they would show their profit or loss for the console. :)

It's not exactly like he's predicting much, if anything its a little high since no major games really came out in May for PS3:
Jan '07 Feb '07 Mar '07 April '07
Wii 436,000 335,000 259,000 360,000
360 294,000 228,000 199,000 174,000
PS3 244,000 127,000 130,000 82,000

Wii is going to basically depend on how much they can make it seems
360 will probably do somewhere around 200k again
PS3 still has no compelling games to spend 600.00 to play so its probably not going much of anywhere.

Ohhh, I see...you took Ockies statement, twisted it, slid the sales numbers to where you wanted them, lined up the data to where it was favorable to your argument to prove your point.

But... when presented with the actual numbers and a projection of the actual numbers...I need to "learn to comprehend" I'll work on that.

I could make one... here's a preview!

I didn't move them around willy nilly... I compared the sales numbers for a period of 5 months after initial launch. This is a direct comparison of the relative success of each launch.

This is a more accurate comparison that sales numbers to date because it factors out the time advantage that the 360 had... the Wii is doing better in an equivalent amount of time, deal with it.

except it really doesn't matter because they didn't launch at the same time. The 360 had a year head start, and if they had launched at the same time who could say exactly how things would be turning out.
The fact that a cheaper system is selling better isn't really surprising.
Plus you are also forgetting that the 360 was supply constrained just like the Wii is in those first 5 months. So all comparing the two is worthless since you couldn't even find one easily until about May or June.

The fact that they were both supply constrained eliminates that as a factor..

But I will agree had the ACTUALLY launched at the same time and were in direct competition during that period of time the numbers would be different, the 360 would have sold less..

Tell me to "learn to comprehend" and "deal with it" again... see how that works out for you.

You're right, I need to learn to respect my elders, if for no other reason than the fact that they are holding their moderator power over me.

Not really since its much easier & cheaper to make Wii s then 360s. The wii is a lot older technology and doesn't require the ramp up the 360 or PS3 does.

I did buy a Wii at launch and just got a 360 last week and I like both I'm just saying I don't think that the Wii is doing soooo much better than 360 at launch because you just don't know.

You fail to take into account Japan and Europe.

In 7 months, the Wii has sold 3+ million in the US. Thats about 420K a month.
In 19 months the 360 has sold ~6.4 million in the US. Thats about 336K a month.

So yes, about 21 months in the US.

Worldwide sales however:
Wii has sold over 8 million in 7 months = 1.15 million a month
360 has sold about 10 million in 19 months = 526K a month

Give the Wii 4 more months at this pace and it catches the 360 in worldwide sales easily.

People need to stop thinking that the only market that matters is the USA, unless you are Microsoft.

And both consoles have heavy hitters coming up to equal each other.

Your Graph is flawed. If you are going to compare console sales for each console to determine which one is on top then compare them from start to present. The 360 has be out since before last November. The graph how ever does show that since the launch of the Wii it has outsold everything else. But that still doesn't make it the clear cut winner.

At least someone here is looking at the whole picture.

I think you're exactly right. It's the median console. The average person probably has a bias about Nintendo thanks to the meager GameCube offerings, but realizes the PS3 was a lot of expensive hype.

My graph is not flawed given its original intent... it was SUPPOSED TO compare them on an equal time scale. I don't know what is so hard about this that people aren't understanding it.

Look, the 360 got a head start. OF COURSE it has sold more to date, it was out a year before the others. HOWEVER, if you compare the total amount sold for all three consoles during the 5 month period after there respective launches... THAT IS WHAT GRAPH SHOWS.

All this does is eliminates the 1 year head start as a factor and compares the three systems on equal grounds. The Wii is selling more units at a faster rate the 360 ever has.

Again:
PS3 is just too expensive but the other two don't really tell you anything for either one.

Wii is old technology, although very fun, and much cheaper and easier to manufacture and is selling out of every single system available.

XBOX 360 sold out of everything for those first several months as well and it wasn't until after about month 5 that they were readily available.

So yes Wii is doing better, they are making more of them then they made 360s. Both were supply constrained, but they had different amounts they could produce two items being supply constrained does not make them equal when different amounts are being made and all are selling out.

I have to agree with CodeX

What are you guys talking about? It's just 3 graphs showing you how much they sold in said number of months. There's nothing more.

I said that the 360 is selling pretty if it's able to maintain half the wii's numbers.

Someone else said that 360 is an absolute winner because of this.

CodeX gave us a chart saying that if we compared the number of units sold in X given months, Wii's sold more by a long shot.

I don't don't see what's so hard to understand. Relatively, the wii is selling more, but realistically, the 360 has sold more.

You fail to take into account Japan and Europe.

*snip*

???

The article was discussing NPD numbers for the United States.

Believe me, we have the exact same discussions / debates when the official numbers for Japan / Europe are released as well. It just makes it easier to discuss the topic at hand (US sales).

Besides...in Japan, it is only a two console race, Nintendo and Sony. I think Microsoft sold 41 consoles in all of Japan :D

Yes it is lol.. the gc was the cheapest last time, not to mention the DC launching at $199 and being around $99 or $150 at the launch of the ps2, however the ps2 demolished both.

What everyone has to understand is that the wii will win inevitably if it keeps selling the way it does right now. If you clicked the link someone showed us on the vgachartz then it showed the trend of how the consoles were heading. It clearly shows us that the wii is selling more than the ps2 at launch and its keeping its thrown at selling more up until now with like 7 months now into the year. Its going to eventually win at this pace its going. I know people are trying to defend what they bought but if you at the raw numbers without any bias and favoratism you got to admit that the wii is a major blockbuster hit.

Microsoft even wants to get part of the wii's cake now. They want part of the casual market themselves after being marketed to just hardcore gamers they want a bigger share of the glory it seems now after reading a article from this site.

Nintendo's owner is now in the top 3 richest in japan
Japan's 10 richest are:

1. Akira Mori: $5.5 billion
2. Masayoshi Son: $5.45 billion
3. Hiroshi Yamauchi: $4.8 billion
4. Kunio Busujima: $4.3 billion
5. Hiroko Takei: $4 billion
6. Nobutada Saji: $3.9 billion
7. Eitaro Itoyama: $3.8 billion
8. Tadashi Yanai: $3.6 billion
9. Takemitsu Takizaki: $2.7 billion
10. Masatoshi Ito: $2.6 billion

Fortune magazine named the wii a winner already it seems lol

If you guys just looked at the numbers and how rich certain people got now then you would understand my point of view. Ps3 obviously failed to be a successor of its last gen ps2 but it hasn't failed yet this gen since it isn't over just yet ;). 360 is selling as many units as it did last generation with the xbox 1. Its not making any growth in units than it did before so now they want part of nintendo's casual market. Just goes to show with all the sales numbers, all the sell outs at stores that you can't just slap a new videocard in a system and call it next gen. Its gotta be innovative and brandnew way or a "revolution" ;) to win over the crowds. I bet like 60 percent of the people buying wii's are the ones that heard it from other people by word of mouth. They basically think like cool, something brand new, gotta try it then they try it at their cousins or something and they love it cuz the multiplayer is very fun with friends and family so everyone wants to buy it. The numbers multiply as more peolpe know and tell others so its like a chain reaction. Its a revolution. Thats why they named it that first but then they changed it to the wii ;). If you looked at the sales numbers then you would understand. Just go to your local ebgames or gamecrazy or gaming boutique then ask someone there. They would give you a fine answer as it is :)

Wii is for the infants, old people, or retarded adult.
comparing the sales number is pointless.
It would be like comparing the total sales of diapers(for infant, old, retarded) to the sales of ties.

i am sure more diapers are sold than ties :D

The 360 is NOT the clear winner, it was just launched first.

if you lure a monkey with a banana long enough, the monkey will come up with a graph too.

But it takes IQ and some basic knowledge to interpret and analyze the facts.
It is a sheer futile act if you compare the sales number of the prodcuts which are not competing.
The sale of PS3 are greatly affected by the existence of 360, just look how the sony fangirls went nuts when they knew DMC 4 is going to xbox. so there is no dout ps3 and 360 are competing.

how about Wii? did the sale of 360 decline sharply after Wii got into market? From the sales number, very very slightly, if there are any.
Wii is not competing with 360 or ps3. In fact, owning a360 or ps3 does not stop them from buying a Wii(like myself). In the case of ps3, most people would think twice if they got a 360. That is what is called "Competing Products".

It amuses and at the same time amazes me that you tell the other people to "learn to comprehend".
