Not sure about the forum, cause I'm not sure what the cause is....

Have a friend that has a dual opteron tyan k8w mobo.... it has onboard sata raid. I helped him design this machine as a basic server, so I am trying to help him figure out this problem! :D

He has bought 2 Seagate 160GB sata drives.... he went into the onboard sil raid config, and setup a raid 1 mirror. When you go into windows 2k setup, it shows up as one HD like it should and he formats it... works fine, THEN after it copies the files and reboots the machine it gets past post, and past the raid config, then just hangs. It won't do anything, won't resume the windows setup. NOW he tried it with a SINGLE sata drive, and the EXACT same thing. SO he tries it with an PATA drive, and VOILA!! works like a charm. Loads windows lightning fast, and we're running. So anyone have any idea what is going on? We kinda need this running last friday! :D

#1 Yes he has it set to boot off of the raid controller in bios,
#2 He has pressed f6 at the windows setup and installed the drivers at the first part of the windows setup.
#3 He has formatted and retried this about 6 times... so it's not a one time 'fluke'

Thanx,QwertyJuan

Only 2 things I can think of...

1. When installing the RAID drivers during windows setup... (the F6 part) I would user a newer driver from the manufacturer's site to see if that resolves the problem. I know with my Promise SX4000, I didn't have the same problem you are experiencing, however the performance of the controller was slower than dirt until I reinstalled windows with a newer driver from Promise.

2. Faulty SATA controller on the motherboard. Try a standalone RAID card and run from that.

I don't have a standalone SATA card to use.... only pata... this mob is only a week old, so we might call TYAN.

I will try the newest drivers, just for kicks though...
