Well, I am running XP and when I restart the machine, command prompt windows pop up and force the machine to shutdown...how can i fix this?

So you can never get the machine to start up all the way?

How about in safe mode?

Do you have a good virus scanner installed?

It sounds software based. If it does it in safe mode as well as normal, you may be stuck with a format/reinstall. Or at least attemting a repair install.

It sounds like some type of virus activity to me.

If you can get in to Safe mode, try running msconfig from the run line and check the startup tab. Uncheck everything for the time being and restart. If everything comes up ok, then you know it is something that is starting up.

Did you install anything or notice anything strange right before this issue started happening? If so, uninstall it in safe mode.

(You get to safe mode by pressing f8 when the windows boot screen says press f8 for boot options (IIRC))

If you're comfortable in the Registry, shut off your Windows Restore service, then search in the Registry for "RUN" and "RUNONCE". There's several entries of each.

If you see things under them that don't look normal, but aren't comfortable deleting them, ask some advice first.
