wierd shut offs withthis HP?

My parents have an HP, its in the same room as my computer. Its probably 2 years old and as of late it is shutting off in the middle of nowhere, actually not shutting off, going into a standby mode. The computer will not come back on unless you hold the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on again. The shut offs are not in any defined intervals, but very random. Im thinking maybe it has something to do with heat or power, but the computer is not turning completely off, just going into a standby. The power button is blinking instead of being on.

any ideas? thanks
