im using spdif out from the integrated sound that goes to a yamaha reciever and from there i have the speaker wire that goes to 2 speakers, and cable (rca cable) from the reciever that goes to a klipsch sub, today the sub started having a rattling sound, and randomly gets louder and when its louder has a crackling sound too. I think its dieing.

This is my sub
This is my reciever, but black
This is my mobo that i am using the spdif out on.
and i cant find a link to my 2 speakers but they are monitor audio mafx-2

Check the levels on your receiver and the sub. Try lowering them to see if the noise goes away. Small subs sometimes bottom out when pushed too hard.

the noise stays if i turn the base down on the reciever, and the power down on the sub.

3 years is pretty old for a subwoofer IMO. How often do you use it? Maybe it's just nearing it's end. It could also be what is mentioned above, although I have never heard of that, he seems to have had a similar problem and it was the fix, proving it can happen. Try what he says.

i have a reciever and speakers using digital out on a motherboard that uses the alc850 like yours, and what happens to me every once in a while, is that after running a dolby digital source and then going back to say a regular mp3, the computer will give me bad crackling in my speakers unless i go back to a DD and back again, then its fine.

have you tried your sub on another system?

i use the sub everyday, and i have no other system to try it out on, i guess ill try burning a cd with songs with heavy bass and putting that in my 360 and see what happens.

as for being old i expect a 300$ sub to last more than 3 years, i mean come on im not made of money.

not to hard, the db setting on my reciever is at -60 (why its negative i dont know) but thats the next marking to the bottom which is silent, its not loud enough that you can feel it, just power full enough to tell that there is a sub and just not speakers.

I don't know then. It's not wear and tear obviously, or shouldn't be for that matter. Have you tried what the guy a few posts above suggested?

i dont see how that would be a problem, if speaker cannot over come gavitiy there is something seriously wrong with it, im not saying hes wrong but must have been something else possibly something in the encloser and when he moved his sub it moved that something around so the sub could work again, i dont see gravity playing a role in weather a speaker works or not.

It could be wear and tear still though, there are many parts to the motor in a subwoofer that can have something go wrong with it, and create unwanted noises when it's playing.

Ok. Try hooking the sub up to another source, try it with an ipod, another receiver somewhere, your computer or w/e else you can hook it up to. Sounds like the sub is blown or the integrated amp is going bad.
