I'm running an e6600 at stock at the nvidia monitor software that came with my evga 680i mobo is reporting like 40 degrees. Is this normal for this cpu or should it be a lot lower? I'm using a zalman 9500 and I have tried to reseat the heatsink but it did not do anything.

I have the same processor and HSF (Zalman 9500). I used AS5 for thermal paste.

I get ~38-40C idle, even at stock speeds. I don't think it's just you :)

Seems normal to me.

What motherboard and software are u using to read temps?

I used cpuTemp and it reads the die temps on the cores and its giving me 30 and 29 at idle? Does that sound about right for stock voltage with this hsf?

Mobo: I have an ASUS P5B Deluxe. For reading the temperatures I use Core Temp and TAT (Intel Thermal Analysis Tool).

As far as ?cpuTemp? giving you 30 and 29 C at idle on each die, that's some good temperature readings. That is, if the program is accurate. Try Core Temp and TAT, what do they report?

I just checked mine at stock everything, and Core Temp and TAT reports on average 37 / 38 C @ idle. I wish mine idled at 30 and 29 C. Of course I know for fact that my wires are blocking airflow in my P180B. Maybe I should fix those :)
