I don't know what is going on as this never happened to me before.

I've put together this computer from parts pulled from working computers. Everything was in working order when it was pulled. But for some weird reason, this system will flat out not power on.

The motherboard is getting power and i've checked the switch. I've even tried to directly short the power switch pins on the motherboard it self. Absolutly nothing happens when I try to power the computer up. THe motherboard is getting power because I can see the green LED light up on it when the powersupply is connected.

This is what i've tried.

I've tried 2 different powersupplys.

I've disconnected every drive and the board will not power up. I don't know what it is going on.

The motherboard is a p4b 266-c, with a 1.8A p4 chip. It can't be a bad video card or ram because it would give me a beep error. It is one thing for it not post but it flat out will not power on at all. What are some possible causes for this? I'm going to check the cpu to make sure it is still seated but that wouldn't prevent the computer from coming on right?

did you try reseating the cpu?

and yes, it would prevent the computer from coming on

check and recheck make sure your power and reset buttons are hooked to the MB correct.yep also make sure cpu is seated nicely. If you are using a thermal paste dont over do it.

"The lights are on but nobody is home."

Reseated the cpu and there is no visible damage to either CPU or motherboard.

I'm going to pull the mobo out of the case to see if there is any shorts or something.

take a peek at the mobo with a magnifying glass... does it look discolored in spots? almost like there's some sort of coating and in some places it's melted?

Figured it out....

Was trying to use TNT2 video card which is 3.3 volt agp and this board is 1.5 volt only....Intel made the move on these and I completely forgot about this.

that'll do it. check and see if either board has that sort of look that i mentioned in my last post.

The board is fine. It was preventing powerup to prevent damage....which is a good thing here. :(

yeah, really. now check the graphics card.

If you ever have something like that happen again its usually a grounding problem for the motherboard. Usually the motherboard screws are either to tight or you used a screw that was too big.
But in your case using a really really old video card was your issue.

 wonder what he's gonna do with the card since he can't use it on his boxen?
