wierd comp not working problem

ok my friends gateway comp is messed up,

first, he presses the power button and it starts up and then goes the the screen as if he pressed F8, where it gives ou those options of starting up in different ways (safemode and others) so he chooses one of them and then the comp shuts down by its self, i was clueless about this.

any idea of what to do? i just told him to call and complain to gateway
