My first Sapphire 5970 (non-oc) died unexpectedly a week after I got it. After getting the RMA back from Sapphire the card started doing some weird things. Every couple of boot ups or so after 2 minutes of idling it would artifact, grey screen, and recover with a message at the bottom of the computer saying that the ATI driver died unexpectedly and recovered.

I emailed sapphire back that the RMA is having problems and they said they tested it before giving it to me and its my box. A GPU-Z reveals that the RMA card got the OC bios, 735/1010. I ran a furmark on it (extreme burn mode) for 10,20, and 30 minutes hitting about 91 degrees per GPU and no crashes.

I've had no crashes in games yet but the 2D issue described above is pissing me off. Its happened to my wife using the computer as well once while she was doing some paperwork online - thankfully it doesn't stay crashed but this is beginning to irratate me.

I removed the sapphire redline and msi afterburner software thinking they were polling the card or somethign causing the voltage to spike but its still doing it.

Has anyone had this happen?

I've seen that sort of thing happen when the power supply in a computer is marginal. It could also be a corrupted driver.

I have a 1kw PS. It doesn't have any 8pin rails so I'm using a 6-8pin converter. If the PS was marginal why would it survive a furmark at full load for 30 minutes or not crash in any games?

Artifacts in 2d only.If so/

Uninstall drivers.

Reboot safe made.

Run driver sweeper.

Run cc cleaner.Registry and clean mode.

Reboot and install cat 10.5.10.5 has higher 2d cocks and voltage.

This is a well documented problem with the 5970. Cat 10.5 drivers seem to correct this by increasing the default 2d clocks. There is nothing wrong with the card or power supply.
