if I am playing a game on a widescreen crt, and the game doesn't support widescreen, is their a way to keep the game from being stretched and just have black bars on the sides?

On a CRT, you can just adjust the image width. That's what I do. I do find it handy to run different refresh rates though. My Sony GDM-FW900 seems to mix up modes with the same Hsync & Vsynv frequencies (ie- same # of lines & refresh rate). 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 both at 85Hz are the biggest offenders, mostly because I generally use those two plus 2304x1440, 1600x1024 and 1280x960. I usually just adjust the 1920x1200 mode in the control panel to run at 90+Hz and leave 1600x1200 at 85Hz so the monitor can tell them apart.

If you have an nVidia card, you can do this:
Display Properties > Settings Tab > Advanced Button > GeForceWhatever Tab > nView display settings > Divice Settings Button > Device Adjustments >

Select the "Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling" radio button, then click ok.

I use it so that games that will only run at 4:3 resolutons dont streach on my 5:4 monitor.
