Widescreen vs. 4:3 and Dell coupons.

I'm looking to get a new monitor since my 19" trinitron crapped the bed. I've been looking at several monitors including the 2007fp and 2007wfp and even considering the 2407wfp. I'm not locked into dell, but I've read good reviews on their monitors. My question is basically:

1) 4:3 vs widescreen. I really like how the widescreen shape is appealing to the eyes, but not how you lose pixels switching from 4:3 to widescreen with the same price and size. To help suggestions, I mainly care about playing games and watching movies, but obviously want documents to look above decent as well. Also, If I were to get a 4:3 I would consider getting another in the future to go dual screen. (Although I would have to have an absurd graphics card to power a game at their native resolutions.)

2) What monitor do you guys think is the best right now for whatever choice of format you think is best for me.

3) If widescreen, is the 24" 2407wfp worth the extra $300 over the 2007fpw?

4) If a Dell seems to be the best (or even if not) are there any good coupons going on right now for flat panel monitors?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) You lose a certain number of pixels when choosing any widescreen monitor. Watching movies and playing games on a widescreen monitor is great, better than my 19" Lacie I had. Don't forget you can get a dual widescreen setup or widescreen/fullscreen setup it does not matter.

2) That decision is up to you. Look into what interests you, read reviews, ask opinions, etc. Nit pick each monitor but also weigh its' price point.

3) Can't comment on that, the monitor looks huge but for regular computer use a 20.1" is fine with me.

4) There are no good Dell deals atm even with a 45 off coupon the price is not worth buying it. If you can find one for around $300 then i'd pull the trigger on it.

Thank you for the reply. One quick thing...when you do have dual screens, you will probably only end up playing games on one of the two screens correct? Otherwise, you'd have to have each monitor at 1600x1200 (native) in order to look crisp which would be pretty much impossible to run with most computers (3200x1200).

Does anyone else have suggestions/comments?

I wouldn't mind if someone said, "this is the best monitor, get it!" ;)

Coming from a 20" 1600x1200 monitor the 20" widescreens (1650x1080) are a downgrade in terms of resolution, so you trade the slightly worse resolution for documents vs. the larger image size when watching movies. If you want a larger screen or higher resolution than what a 20" can provide all the choices are widescreen anyways.

If you mostly work with documents i'd say the 24" is more than worth it. However if movies/games are the primary use you'd be better off going with the smaller monitor (WS or not) and spending the cash you're saving on a new video card(not sure what you're using now tho).

Buy the Dell 3007, it is the best monitor, get it! ;)

I haven't seen anyone playing games on more than one monitor...
It's quite useless because you get a large hole in the middle so it's impossible to play FPS games. Strategy works but still no fun in my opinion. The only games that makes more than one screen worth it is flight-simulators (as far as I know atleast).

If you use 3 monitors its another thing though, then the center comes in the middle of the middle monitor and that might work but probably not many computers that can utilize 3 monitors and run a game on all 3.

So widescreen vs. dual 4:3. You get more space for office/browsing tasks but in games and movies you will be limited to one monitor which (in my eyes) are inferior to a widescreen (assuming the game/movie is widescreen).

Thanks brumwald, that's a big help. I'm seriously considering the Dell 2700fpw, Viewsonic VP2030b and VX2025wm, and the new LG L204WT. Any suggestions please?
