Widescreen on my 19'' CRT?

I once read in a post that someone is using a 4:3 19'' CRT monitor and he plays his HL2 in 16:9 widescreen format just with the black bars on the top and the bottom. Does anyone else do this? If so, how would I set that up? And also is that a better experience?
 
The only benefit to doing that I would think is so you have a wider field of view. This would be helpful I suppose in CS:Source if you're playing competetively, but other than that wouldn't be that great. I'd rather have my my game take up the whole screen...
 
I use 16:9 widescreen for WoW on my 19" CRT. I play in windowed mode anyway, and widescreen makes a HUGE difference. I can't play in full screen/non-wide mode anymore, as it nearly makes me sick (not sure why... it just does).

I haven't tried it in HL2 yet though, but I'm fairly sure I would enjoy it more than 1280x1024 full screen.
