I am planning to buy a Viewsonic 20'' Widescreen Monitor.
I want to use it as a television too by connecting it to my Leadtek PCI TV Tuner Card.

Somewhere it was mentioned that most tv tuners do not support 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. Is this true? If it is, can i somehow adjust the software to display the 16:9 picture.

It doesnt matter if its not going to be the native 16:9 or 16:10 ratio. I just dont want to see the black bars on the sides.

TV Tuner card:

LEADTEK DELUXE TV2000XP

also one more thing, i have a geforce 6 6600gt

will it be enough to handle this monitor. im not going to be playing games at highest possible resolution, just something reasonable.

Your TV Tuner is your standard SDTV, meaning its resolution is very low and will not look so hot stretched across the 20". Unless you buy a HD tuner and also have HD service then you'll surfer from this problem.

As for your graphics card, running in lower resolutions will hurt image quality in both its just simply a lower resolution and also its not the monitors native resolution.

just to add to my previous post, i dont care about hdtv progrmming

i am just looking to find out if i hook up my regular pci tv tuner, will it be possible to display the tv image full screen on my widescreen monitor. i dont want to see the annoying black bars.

It can fill the whole screen with either the software that comes with the TV Tuner or your monitors setting. I have an ATI all In wonder on a 22" Widescreen and I fill up the screen even if the TV Tuner only displays SDTV. I don't like the black bars on the sides because it's like your not making use of your 22" size. I'd stretch it to fill the screen.

Hmm, hate black bars but like horribly disfigured humans and shapes, how interesting.

now just WHO do you think you are with that uid?

:D jk! you might want to try an HD tuner, you might as well enjoy high definition TV if you are watching on that screen

most widescreen hidef recordings I watch on my widescreen lappy fill up most of the screen with tiny bars on top and bottom (like 1cm tiny)

Ideally, the tuner card's application software window should auto-adjust to the format of the incoming picture (either 4:3 or 16:9, depending on source). If the tuner card supports HD sources, then the application software should, by rights, also support 16:9. If the tuner card supports HD sources, then the application software should, at minimum, have a 16:9 display option (either automatic or forced). For the graphics adapter itself, support for widescreen and/or custom modes (preferably both) if DVI is not supported is a must. Ideally, the display should support HDMI and HDCP.

If you are relying on the operating system for application support for your TV tuner, other than Windows Vista (Home Premium and Ultimate), your only real choice is Media Center Edition 2005, as Media Center also supports a windowed widescreen mode in addition to full-screen.

The problem is that display matching (whether on a portable or non-portable display) is often inexact. To obviate this, I'll instead watch the content in a window (as opposed to full screen).

Yes, I've seen them before. I can't recall make or model but I believe ATI made a HD card iirc..

In fact, ATI has made more than one.

They are as follows:

HDTV Wonder (original)
TV Wonder 650 (current-generation)

Both support OTA HDTV signaling (US only) and analog CATV (Windows XP only). (The OTA HDTV support is also available using Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate Editions via Windows Media Center.) I own an HDTV Wonder which gets heavy use via Vista Ultimate's Media Center (and before that, Media Center Edition 2005) as my PC was my original HD testbed (since then, I've purchased a Philips 42PF7320A plasma for my bedroom, so you can safely assume that I think that HD is for me).
