Widescreen LCD monitors and games?

What happens if you try to use a widescreen LCD with a game that doesn't support widescreen resolutions? Does it stretch the image, or do you get a 4:3 square (and the left and right sides have horizontal bars)?
 
it can do either depending on whaty ou have your drivers set to do.

many games (at least the ones I play) will allow widescreen support, either natively, or through edited config files.
