Widescreen gaming?

Are there any good games that easily support widescreen gaming, and not just stretching of the horizontal part of the screen as CRT's do to console games?

Could you list a few titles and how common is this feature? I know that 16x9 is more suited to the human eye, offering an advantage in FPS games and more picturesque, easier-to-view images, so why don't more game developers take advantage of this?

Not too many widescreen monitors out there is the "why"... just now are we seeing changes with widescreen notebooks becoming commanplace (with real gaming video cards no less), and just recently, although still geared more towards media/monitors, we have set top widescreen lcd's.

As for the games, here is a list of what I play on my HP L2335.

BF1942/Exp1/Exp2/DC
-widescreen not supported natively
-menus cannot be resized (that I know of)
-in game resolution can be manually set in profile INI's
UT2004
-Does not show widescreen resolutions besides 1920x1200 in menu. Cfg editable I'm sure though (I haven't tried, but hell, you can config everything else)
BF:Vietnam
-same as bf1942, but menus display properly
FarCry
-sweet... supports widescreen resolutions natively
Splinter Cell:pandora Tomorrow
-can anyone tell me how to hack this one?
Max Payne 2
-supported natively

Checked out a few more...

SW:KotOR
-unsupported, anyone know how?
NWN
-supported, auto detected
Homeworld2
-cmd line switch
-crashes... yay

Not to steal a thread here, but since you mentioned you have a HP L2335, how do you like it, worth the bucks etc? This thing has my interest.. :D

Thanks

Edit..Never mind, found your review thread. Thanks

Can you play CS in 1920x1200 ?
you "can" but it's stretched out - the game engine doesn't support anything other than the 4:3 format. My Laptop is a wide screen and I've tried and it just doesnt

I've had good luck with UT2003 / 2004, and modified my user ini for the BF series and they work fine at with widescreen (not 1920 x 1200 as the GF4200 vid just can't handle that :) ).

On the widescreenforums site there some guys who hack game exes to support ws modes. But I suspect they wont touch old classics before more users gets ws screens.

The best would be if you could modify Warcraft 3 to give you a wider view, this giving you an advantage over other players :) hey, you shelled out the big bucks for widescreen, why not?

I would be happy if war3 would work with portrait mode, war3 in 1024x1280 looks baaaad ;) [hence why I use windowed mode]

Cool I found this.

Looks fantastic. Anyone know if you can play Unreal Torunament 1 in widescreen?

UT1 worked fine at 1680x1050 (16:10 aspect) on my laptop.

Can you play CS in 1920x1200 ?

It can stretch if you're using older versions. Steam (CS 1.6) supports widescreen properly.

I'm gonna have to second the recommendation for TigerDave's list. Lurking where HTPC users hang out is the easiest way to get info on running your fave games in widescreen.
