Widescreen display; yay or nay?

I’m considering upgrading my laptop, but looking round my local consumer electronics store the majority on display are widescreen. Although I can imagine widescreen displays are nice for watching DVD’s, I am concerned about how the dimensions might affect the display in other applications; especially games. Do modern graphics cards/drivers offer native support for widescreen displays, or will I find all my applications simply look elongated?

Could somebody please indicate the advantages of a widescreen display (either spcifically relating to laptops or any TFT monitor) and whether there are any disadvantages?

Many thanks.

To be honest it'll be personal preference I think. I've seen people gaming on the widescreen laptops all the time at school and it looks fine to me.

The major advantage to having a widescreen display is being able to put one window beside another. This can be kind of handy at times if you multi task.

You will loose a little bit of height on the display so you'll have to scroll a bit more on a web page (depending on how high resolution your panel is too I suppose, higher res obviously would reduce the need to scroll if you can handle the small fonts).

From what i've seen I wouldn't mind a widescreen laptop.

I prefer the widescreen form factor for laptops over the 'standard' 4:3 form factor, a shorter and wider laptop means makes it easier to put in cases and bags, it also looks much nicer when you fold it up...

Seems like most newer games are supporting widescreen, which is actually an advantage in games due to the larger view point. I think that's the way everything will eventually go. I'd get a widescreen.

Many thanks for your contributions; I appreciate it. I feel a lot happier about the prospect of taking the plunge and getting a new laptop now.
