Wi-Fi Security Broken

Those that didn't already know this with regards to WEP should NOT be even touching a computer let alone configuring a wireless network. WEP has never been fully secure and easy to break into. Those who rely on WEP deserve all they get IMHO.
 
Yeah, I went and read this under the concern that WPA was the culprit. When I read that they were still talking about WEP I basically just rolled my eyes.

The next news flash will probably be that 40-bit encryption isn't as secure as 128-bit.
 
I thought they were going to say that WPA2 has been easily cracked. What kind of an article is this? Welcome to a few years ago. :rolleyes:
 
I was panicking thinking that WPA and WPA2 had been cracked, and then I read WEP. Who gives a freaking damn if WEP yet again has been cracked? It was cracked years ago, instead of recracking WEP why not get firmware and driver updates to all the wireless stuff out that doesn’t support the stronger encryption that can be updated. Man what a waste of time and money.
 
I'm curious does MAC address filtering help, or is it just as broken as WEP?
 
Combining MAC filtering with WEP would help deter a casual snooper, a bit. But if a person who knows what they're doing attacks you, I believe they can just sniff packets and "borrow" a MAC from the acquired data.

Just like above posters, I thought weaknesses in WPA/2 had been discovered...

When gathering packets required to hack the WEP password to begin with. Mac addresses are handed out with it. When I was using BackTrack2 I got mac addresses to all devices and the packets.
 
Getting MAC addresses is easy sure, but can devices send a fake mac address to fool the router into thinking you are someone else? What the point of a hardware address if it can be easily changed?

Just as easily as your router can MAC Clone can my laptop.
 
OK, I'm just going to ask. My standard wireless security I set up on my devices is a 128 bit WEP key, SSID disabled and a deny all except MAC address list. How long would it take to hack that security? Assume both cases, you are looking for my network specifically and are just browsing for easy hacks.

No offense, but I honestly think that question is irrelevant. If you're worried about security, you shouldn't be using WEP period. If you're not worried about security, it doesn't matter how long it takes.

As previously stated, having all of that may stop the casual browser, but if someone is *looking* to get into your WEP network, it won't take long. SSID disabled won't slow them down and neither will a DAE MAC list. From there, it's just a matter of time in gathering the required packets (not that long) and cracking it. As previously stated, if you're worried about security, don't even bother with WEP.

When I open my network browser.

Your network is still shouting a SSID when it transmits. However you have to actively be monitoring to find it. If I was looking to get into your network. The same as before still goes. Less than 1minute. Lock in frequency, start packet injection and decrypt.
 
It amazes me how many people/municipalities turn off "Broadcast SSID" and then don't use any encryption. They must think that the SSID is *never* broadcast? :confused:

To be honest, WEP is better than nothing for keeping out cruisers. If your neighbor wants to get on, that's a different story. ;)
