Wi-Fi Connection Issue

Hey all, have a very weird connection issue. It takes me 10+ times to connect to my modem via Wi-Fi. I also connected another router to that (A new hotspot), and still have the exact issue. Although if I go to a friend's Wi-Fi, or somewhere such as Starbucks, it connects on first try, everytime...

It started happening, so first I reset the modem (Set factory defaults), no go. So then I went into device manager, removed the Broadcom drivers, reinstalled them from the HP website, same issue. Reinstalled Windows, issue still continues. I even removed the WPA encryption, and changed the router name, and issue still happens..

So now I'm puzzled since I did a full reinstall of Windows, new drivers, etc.

Here's what I get below when I try to troubleshoot my error.

Oh, and the network below that I wanna connect to, is "Woods".
"Elite" was my 2nd router, but issue happens on that one also.

Have you tried going into your wireless routers settings and switching the frequency channels (1,6, or 11)?

Sounds like an interference issue in your LAN. Pretty sure most routers default to 6 and 90% of people never switch it out of the box and the other 9% usually switch it to 4 or 5 not realizing they run into each other still. I'd try that and see if it solves the problem. Go through the channels one by one if you have to and perhaps then start by switching the router from mixed mode to 802.11b then testing 802.11g, etc. if that works.

So which should I switch to?

Also got this when I ran the Intel scan tool, but drivers show they're installed..

I have a 2Wire modem/router. Is it DTIM Period? That's at 1. Power Settings is at 4. Oh wait, I see Channel 1 (freq). Is that it?

Broadcom WIFI NICs are in general very picky, they usually work decently but I've seen several models behaving the way you describe with numerous of APs. Replace it with an Atheros WLAN card (preferably) or Intel and it'll work fine.

Yeah someone told me to get an Atheros.

Now I'm not a big laptop guru, so which one will work for me? It's about an '10 HP DV6. Running W8 now. I wanna get one cheap as possible that has good drivers though.

Thanks for your post.

First eliminate interference. Before you burn down the barn to solve the fly problem, try a fly swatter.

Please explain in English. Are you saying to change freq channels, or what? There isn't much interface in my house. It's the only router now, nothing near it that could interfere. The only thing I could think of, is that it started happened around when the neighbors got Wi-Fi. Maybe just a coincidence.

You should try setting your router to broadcast either Channel's 1, 6, and 11 first. Try each one separately (minus whatever channel it's currently defaulted on) and see if the connection problem goes away. Make sure to save the changes each time.

That is exactly what he is saying. For instance:

As you can see from the list on my router, the channel is the number on the far left and mine happens to show the actual frequency used on that channel. There are at least 11 to choose from although some consumer wireless routers only give you the ability to switch between just 1, 6, 11. Try that first and foremost and retest your connection from the laptop to wireless router.

Doesn't matter if you have a ton of electronics in your house or walk around with a 2.4Ghz cordless phone in your pocket instead of an iPhone. Wireless signals travel up and everywhere. Depending on if it's located near a window it can travel well over a hundred feet outside with relative ease. That's just assuming you're 802.11g. One of the reasons I flashed my wireless router was so I could limit the physical distance it travels. Although this does not help with interference issues whatsoever.

But I digress I don't want to confuse you can further. Just make those changes first and we can go from there.

Thanks so much!! Yeah, it was channel 1 by default. I switched to 6, and also unplugged the NIC, and re-inserted it, just "in case".

So far, working great. But we will see when I use it more today. Some times it'll work great, and then work like crap later. But maybe that got it. If not, then I'll get an Atheros card.

I appreciate you so much.
