Why would my multiplier change?

On a whim, i just pulled up CPU-Z to make sure my RAM timings were where i set them last night (forgot to check after i set them). The first thing i noticed was that my CPU was listing 3000.1 Mhz with a multiplier of 10 x 300. Then, before i had a chance to switch to the RAM tab, the Mhz dropped to 1800.1 with a multiplier of 6 x 300. What's happening. Is this normal?

Here's my system:

Intel E6700
Abit IP35 Pro
2x1gb Crucial Ballistix Tracers DDR2-800
X1800 Crossfire Card
Tagan Silver GuardianX 1000w PSU

It seems weird to me - is it some power saving option in teh BIOS or something?

Thanks for your help!
Chris

Exactly...Power saving - called SpeedStep I think. It seems to be working correctly, and your speeds seem to change depending on usage levels. Although I always turn such things off on my machines (NEVER idle!), I would suggest you leave yours alone, unless you have a good reason not to. If you put any kind of regular load on the CPU, you should see it stay @ full speed and not change (more than a fraction of an FSB really).

Long story short: Everything's fine, nothing to worry about.
