Why Star Wars the Old Republic is better than any other game!

This WoW clone will bomb just like Warhammer Online did. Won't make the same mistake again and buy into this one.

Agreed.

MMOs are a stagnant genre, and they have some very fundamental limitations as video games that will never disappear. After a while, all MMO players realize they are forever approaching a set of goalposts that moves back every three months. Either they quit playing MMOs or they accept that they enjoy chasing the wind.

Even Bioware brings their "A" game, wooing WoW's clientele is a daunting task. Who wants to give up their characters they've spent so many years on? Who wants to go from a stable, established, polished MMO to one that is two or three years away from being anywhere close to that league of stability and polish?

Until someone does something completely different and creative, all MMOs might as well release under the name "Not WoW".

The game will do well in the first 3 months of so, the franchise recognition will pull in a bunch of people. I vividly recall scores of people saying Rift will be the next big thing and it fizzled rather quickly. Sure, some are still playing it but it never reached any kind of broad appeal.

I think MMOs are a thing of the past really. They don't provide any value proposition over other games which are less expensive and less time intensive.

I did the same thing you did, and I uhh, ignored my own lesson learned to give Rift a try.

It lasted ONE WEEKEND before I put it down for good.

I played the beta over the weekend up until level 15. Even though I enjoyed it quite a bit (its a fucking Star Wars Bioware game), I do not believe this game is going to last without going F2P. There are a lot of design choices that I cannot believe that Bioware made. Instead of using the MMO part of the game to build the story and draw you in, we get pretty much nothing but a single player experience with other people running around. Another game was released recently with this issue that had to go F2P to survive - DCUO. I was so looking forward to this game being a great thing to play with the many friends I made when playing WoW but it literally could be a single player game with coop instead of an MMO. I am that disappointed with it.

They didn't even implement LFG in the game - you have to use general chat like in vanilla WoW. Not that the 'instances' are even good - they are pretty much all just generic mobs. Every one that has stated about their experience that I have read has said that once you get past level 25 the game pretty much sucks and is completely linear with no end game.

For me, this game should be about a year from being ready for release instead of less than a month.

For as much as I despise WoW, it is still night and day better than this game in its current state.

Also, I am extremely concerned about Mass Effect 3 after playing this and hearing about how off base DA2 was.

I didn't buy into the last two mmo's I've played Aion & rift. This seems a bit different and quite frankly late night after work I could use some entertainment.

I think your all crazy, I was skeptical before I played it and even though I still have some reservations (the use of sharding) I think this game is going to be a significant success. All those people that said warhammer online, Aion, and Rift were gonna be wow killers were not me. Nothing is going to kill wow but SWTOR will surely take a chunk of wow subscribers as well as bring in even more people to the MMO genre purely based on the strength of biowares story telling and the Star Wars IP. There's definite room for improvement but as long as they don't wildly deviate from their current path this game will make back their 130 million budget on box sales alone. The combat animations and sound are amazing, the story voice over will make it impossible to go back to text based quests, and their is so much room for expansion in the world they created it's insane.

As someone who has been in Beta since about August (or at least 3 builds worth, I'm not talking about the weekend betas) I'd have to say that if someone goes into SW:TOR thinking that it is a MMO version of KOTOR they will mostly be happy. Those that go into it for a good Star Wars game will mostly be happy. Those that go into it thinking it is a WOW clone will be pissed off.

The single player aspects are actually very well done, whether that will pull more folks in or push them away remains to be seen, it certainly feels like a Bioware game. Being able to have a companion was initially kind of odd, but shows its worth when you are playing solo. PvP's pretty much the same PvP everyone’s been playing since EQ1 once everyone figures out the "power build" that is likely what you will see as the majority on any of the PvP servers.

The space combat is a joke. It looks good while you are playing but it is 100% on rails.

The game as a whole is very polished, but has some glaring issues, the lack of a decent LFG system, like mentioned above being a big one. You pretty much have to spam the chat channels.

I'll definitely give it a try. I liked Rift and Warhammer online quite a bit. I'm not a hardcore MMO player though. 5-10 hours a week tops. I usually buy an mmo, play for 3 months and then quit. Hopefully the wife and I will both like this game and it'll give us something to play together.

*snort drool* huh? Sorry the game is so freaking boring, I fell asleep. I played SWG back in 04-05 and 08 and I don't think I'll ever be able to play another mmo. Everything else seems so...linear and boring now.

The main thing people are forgetting here is that this does not have to have 10 million subs to be a successful MMO. I think it will survive just fine, in a year it will be really well tweaked and fixed and probably has a long and fruitful life ahead. I played the weekend beta, its fun. I could enjoy it. The main glaring issue for me is the endgame. I'm sure there is some stuff, I hope they have learned from other MMOs failures and built a lot of end game stuff. That is what kills MMOs.

ppl should actually watch that video lol. back massage epic. 2 bad the game looks terrible so im going to pass even though its starwars

It really does look bad. Hopefully that's just another example of someone running on a shitty computer with settings turned down.

The environment is attractive and interesting, but the clothing texture is so poor it drives me nuts.

Having said that, the storylines are good to excellent, and the combat is fun if standard MMO.

Did you watch it at 1080p? I was running the game full settings the only quality degradation would have been from me exporting from sony vegas. Game actually looks really good, the art style inst exactly my cup of tea but the animations are impressive.

Animations are good. The questing is cool for a bit, but eventually I just want to quickly accept the quest and move on. The art style is atrocious in my mind. I really dislike it. The game is just ugly for an mmo in this day and age.

I gotta say, I'm not excited. I tried it on a beta weekend and was very meh. It isn't bad, but it is nothing new. It is WoW in space. That's fine, but I feel Rift is WoW done better and give that, I'd rather play Rift.

Don't get me wrong, I think the game will do fine. It is not a bad game, and it is Star Wars and there are lots of SW fanboys. Nor am I hoping it fails, more quality MMOs is a good thing, may help force companies not to release them in a crap state.

I just can't see playing it myself. Maybe I didn't give the story enough chance but I found the fully voiced thing annoying when the missions were stock MMO fare like "Go kill 10 dudes." Other than that, I found nothing new.

Oh and Dan, yes it really does look pretty bad. Maybe a little better than WoW but that's it. Not nearly as shiny as Rift. It's graphics are rather dated. They seem to run fast, but they are not what one might hope for out of a modern, PC only, title.

Likely 2 mil subscribers preorder.
it has a good story, a different tempo and as far I played it allowed me to have fun.

Hard to say if it makes it trough the mmo crowd but I believe it might do it.

Flopper i remember hearing 1.8 a while back so I wouldnt be suprised if they come close to 3 million sales day after launch.

High initial sales: most likely
Returning subscription base: probably drop off real quick

Not that its a bad game, it was fun, just not enjoyable enough for me to sub to it

agreed thats why guild wars 2 will be the MMO to get as it is vastly different then WOW. its more like Skyrim done in MMO.

I think gw2 is way over hyped in my opinion.

care to explain? its doing things refreshing/.different compared to all the other mmo's trying t copy WOW.

if gw2 can promise all the feautres they said they wil and deliver it in a bug free game like rift, it will be a masterpiece. all for the price of £0.00 per month

I just don't get gaga over a game I haven't tried yet. Yes it will have new features but so have other mmo's in the past and they didn't last long. For me once I have played that new feature over and over it gets stale. Don't get me wrong I will probably try out gw2 im just not that excited over it.

many mmo's dont have new features. what does this star wars game have compared to wow/rift?

So what does guild wars 2 need in order to be a good game based on your opinion?

Its Star Wars. For many here that may not be enough but the Star Wars franchise is arguable one of the most popular and loved franchises (even post eps 1-3) in the last 100 years (ever really). Even if you hate, you know what it is. That alone will save this MMO for at least a year.

I leave you with the best superbowl commercial of 2010:

cutest commercial ever. You know you've tried it at the grocery store, elevator doors, etc

For me Swtor offers more fun. I've had more fun playing swtor during the beta weekend tests than I did playing wow/rift. Just like any other game out there its your own opinion that counts. If you play something and enjoy logging in then it is worth the money to spend. Just like how some people didn't like Tabula Rasa when it came out yet I thought it was fun and bought the ce. Wich now im looking at as a door stop but thats another story.

If I try gw2 and it catches me in the way swtor did then i'll pick it up.

i like star wars but not as much as the hardcore fans. most star wars games i have played i did not enjoy

I did and it looked like ass. The graphics suck. I'm sorry, but anything other than cut scene videos for this game just look horrid. At least given what I've seen so far.

I wouldn't go as far as 'horrid', but they are pretty subpar. And the color scheme and artistic layout is pretty cartoony for my taste.

Their sound effects are pretty top notch though, so I will give them that

This entire game is over-hyped tripe.

Have fun with your bomb.

Biowares story, companions, voice acting for both and it is star wars a scifi setting.

The quest flow a lot better imo. I never once found myself out grinding mobs to get a level.
A lot of the kill so many boar style quest are optional and completed automatically while on another quest. You don't have to trek back and forth to talk to someone to finish them. You don't have to do them at all.

Choices you make in the game seem to actually matter, you can kill a guy or let him live and the results of that action come back to haunt you later in the game, or benefit you.

I can see how these things wouldn't appeal to everyone but plenty of people enjoy them. I don't think it will be a wow killer, and I'm fine with that, but I think it will do well. I think too many people are looking for the wow killer, I'm just looking for a fun game and swtor delivers that for me.
