Why so slow?

Ok I've searched and tried suggestions from past threads and I'm still not sure it's running right.

I just started this folding thing today, I downloaded the graphical version, and so far after about 1.5-2hrs it's only completed 2 frames? The machine is just an old spare that was sitting here unused, s423 Pentium 4 @ 1.5ghz... but for W/U end it says "10d: 8h: 58m"

Is that time accurate? That is ridiculous compared to some of the work unit per day or per two days I've seen people talk about in here.

all is fine...you are running on a slower computer and have (a most likely) a big WU. the producers you are talking about are running top top of the line gear and multipule cores. SOOO Just let it crunch and dont worry about it ;)

oh and
Welcome to the [H]orde

Hm... well this just won't do... I'm gonna have to gather some old parts and build more machines for this :D

Thanks for the welcome... something else to spend money on

Like the first response said, its probably a big WU.. 600 pointers basically take 5 days on a P4 2.4GHz (Stanford's benchmark machine, they determine the points by multiplying the time it takes to complete on that CPU by 110 points per day..)..

Another thing too.. the time-until-completion readings on the Stanford graphical front-end aren't always accurate especially early-on in the WU.. wait until it has a few frames done.

Welcome to the [H]orde, thanks for your contribution to humanity.

Yeah I already figured that out, after it got to frame 5 I checked it again just to see, and it said 8 days remaining (a couple hours before, it said 10 days remaining).

That's the spirit! If you're interested in stats (which most of us are) things can be a little boring with just one machine. Go forth and borg ;)

Oh you are so going to use up your spare money building new machines to Fold on.

I find EMIII is pretty accurate on completion times.

I'm a big fan of EM3, helps me keep an eye on my borg population.

BTW: Welcome to the [H]orde!

signature says: Opteron 165 CCBBE 0610DPMW (2.8ghz @ 1.36v on air)

when are you gonna get your Opteron folding?

Welcome to the [H]ardest DC team around! :D

and go get yourself a badge when you turn in a work unit.

Typically the opteron machine is only on when I'm using it (and half that time is spent gaming). This is a fairly small room and it heats up QUICK. Maybe this winter when it cools down a bit and I can open the window, I'll use both machines, but it gets unbearably hot in here if I were to run both machines full tilt.

We're about to move, maybe when we do I'll set up a small station in another room so heat doesn't bug me.

Evern with the limited usage the opteron gets you may find it folds faster than the p4. Or, you may choose to leave it on more. :) Give it a shot and see what you think..

Anyway, welcome to the horde. Here's a distributed computing link I wrote about the folding at home project. You may pick up a thing or two in there.

Keep in mind that opty 165 is a dual core, as such you can run 2 instances of Folding At Home on that one machine. Try dropping the graphical version as well and switching to the console. Simpler to run, runs faster, won't hurt your gaming even with both cores running at 100%.

Just a thought :)

Listen to Bill, he is old and wise.
:p

Running both cores of the Opty rig right now, one (my first) WU should be completed by the time I get home tonight (probly another 3-4 hrs, less than 24 hr turnaround time total :D )....but holy hell is it hot in here. I think once these two finish, I'll put the opty on hold until winter rolls around. I'm talking a 10+ degree difference between this room and the house, you can feel the heat OUTSIDE my door a few steps before entering. This is houston.. it's hot here always :(

About to go to fry's, they've got a Pent. D 915/ECS board combo for 119 bucks, I think im gonna get that and put it in a spare case with a spare old 20gb hard drive and generic old PSU i've got laying around and put it ...somewhere other than this room maybe. Cuz seriously... it's freaking HOT in here.
