ok so im brand new to this....got a whole 2 units completed and on one of my machine a dell p2400, windows 2k ive got 12500 frames to complete...this is gonna take forever

Is there any way i can keep that machine to just only do 400 and 500 frame units?

There's a common misconception about how the numbers of frames and steps affect folding time. Most units have different numbers of steps, however they are divided into large units called frames.

The frames do not always take the same amount of time to complete across platforms however. One 400 frame WU might take the same amount of time as a 100 frame unit, it all just depends on what you have in your rig, and what it's chewing on.

I'd suggest running something like EMIII (www.em-dc.com) as it will tell you more information about what unit your crunching and will do calculations to tell you how long each frame is taking and the estimated time until completion.

i have noticed my laptop only does 400 frame wu while my desktop always does 2500 frame wu.

WHY?!!

There's not really any way to control what kind of units your PC will get... and the number of frames vary from protein to protein.... some may only have 100 frames, but take 40 min a frame..... some may have 400 frames and take 4 minutes a frame...

You can see alot of info about the protein you have here...

so basically i just let it do its thing....well thats kewl...i got a few others workin for me too...ok lets test this badge thing

thanks for the help...i need to read more on this subject

Yup, F@H is pretty much hands free after initial setup... monitoring programs (like EMIII that phantom mentioned) are always nice to have if you have 1 boxen, or 700.....

Feel free to ask any other questions you might have... we're a pretty friendly bunch... some are too friendly (read: K*, marty,etc).... but always remember to watch out for the reach through!

QFT and Welcome to the team!

Also the size of the WU that Stanford will send to any given machine is related to it's RAM......

Check the anti-fold server thread about some info on this....

I don't remember exactly what the numbers were but you wouldn't get the big 600pointers if you didn't have a certain amount of memory.

Yup... around 256MB right now.... but in the beta console client, I think it's set higher than that....

getting proteins is more about dumb luck than anything... you tend to get assigned to the same server you're returning a WU to... not every server assigns big WUs (600 pointers/etc).... the server status page that Stanford has includes alot of info about each server....

ok so your saying the lesser ram gets the smaller ones?...i thin thats what i got out of that....it has 256 in it...hmm should prolly drop it a litle then

You won't want to remove the RAM, the big thing is that just because the units have more steps or frames doesn't mean they are slower. As OSU said, times vary greatly from machine to machine, and platform to platform. It's really a crapshoot as to what you're going to get, so if you're running normal units, this is behaviour that can be expected. RAM really becomes an issue below 64mb which is the bare minimum, or above 512 which starts qualifying you for big work unit territory.

Calmdown grasshopper-
If you are wishing smaller WU why?
Usual answers are frequent boots, do not run 24/7, did not change user name to "gemniii, team 33".
Another alternative is to select timeless WU.
pm for help.

i was just saying smaller wu because its only a 400...so it get em done faster you know...but like i said..im a noob in this area so i learnin...
