You'll have to forgive me... i'm rather new at all this hardware stuff... Why overclock your processor? if it gives you more out of it, why not overclock? i tried googling it, looking for why... but i didn't find anything... or maybe i just suck at searching:( ...

The real question is why not?

Why climb a mountain? Because its there!
Why do birds fly? because
Why do dogs lick their ...never mind ( because they can)

One OVCKLS to get the absolute most from ones parts.
Kinda like why build the fastest car?
And the rush from pushing the on button for the first time...indescribabable!

Because I love the smell of burning CPUs in the morning:eek:

The "real" reason...free performance, the fact that I can buy a $75 dollar chip (2500 barton) and with a little bit of time and effort make it run at the exact same speed and specs as a $207 chip (3200 barton)

It's also loads of fun and addicting as hell

^^

What he said exactly!

Cheers,

As someone said above, I can buy me a sub-$100 processor and get the performance of a $130+ processor.

either...

1.your not rich enough to buy the CPU you OCed to
2.you need the fastest rig so you can sleep at night
3.your bored
4.its your job to
5.its the "in" thing to do
6. 1, 2, 3, 4, together (maybe 5)

Oh yeah  all my friends overclock (except for you ;) ) . Mostly 2 and 3. Definitly 2

It's the feeling of being able to pull one over on "the man." ;)
As stated, I have a mobile 2400 Barton that cost me $77 & I can best a P4 3.2ghz in SSSondra's (04) cpu bench. As for saving money...idk about that, b/c of all the money I've spent on mod's to be able to oc to this level (currently @ 2.7ghz w/ watercooling). But the bonus is w/ a relatively small investment in another waterblock I can use the same setup w/ a p4 or an A64 system. So it's not altogther money lost.
IMO, the main reason I do it, is b/c I can...it's an interesting hobby that I find personally compelling. Sure I could buy a top of the line p4 or fx53 assemble it, run it @ stock & the system would be fast as h311. But after building literally in the triple digits of stock, cookie cutter systems, I yearn for a little more adventure. In most instances you're simply trodding a path that someone else has laid, but there's always the posibility one will discover an overclocking gem (i.e., someone discovered bh-5, the dltc 1700's, the 2.4ghz p4's, the mobile Bartons, etc.).
