Why no new nvidia card?

Is it just me, or won't nvidia be absolutely screwed when Ati bring out there new cards?
or, they could be using the sli thing (two 6800gt = costs same as x850 xt pe which costs $649 (so they don't have as much huge demand), while two 6800gt will be $700).
or they could be keeping it a total secret, and then just come out in a few weeks saying surprise here is nv48.
However i do fear that they may be using the SLI card, as opposed to a fall refresh...
any thoughts??? :confused:
 
yes, however due to the fact that there is far more focus on the average joe to now get excellent graphics card (due to doom 3 half life 2, increased advertising etc.) (reason why so few availble cards,as is normally v.small market segment) most people will think ah newer card must be better, i'll go and buy that.
also, though ATI is probably lying they are bringing out all these 40% increases here and there. probably bollocs, but...
 
The latest round of cards seem to be a manufacturing cost cutting initative by ATi less the X850 IMO. The are inking out a couple extra MHZ for marketing/sales purposes. This does not really change anything when compared to nVidia's offerings. nVidia is better in some areas and ATi is better in others. Just keep in mind that ATi will need to make a foundational tech change soon to remain competative. The R300 just doesn't have enough life left to compete with 2 or 3 6800 refreshes.
 
Yes, even 3-4 years if no new 3d engine is out to stress more on the GPU.
 
You will find that ati always put out a refresh part that was cheaper to make. The 9600pro was slower than the 9500pro, but was cheaper to make so they ditched the 9500pro. The refreshes aren't always the the best thing on the market, it's usually a way for the companies to make the same product cheaper and improve it as much as possible.

Nvidia is making a killing on the 6800gt, I really don't see a reason to refresh unless they can make the 6800gt cheaper.

That's what the NV48 (6850 series?) can do - smaller feature size equals die shrink equals more dies per wafer equals cheaper GPUs. They should be able to increase the core clockspeed by a fair bit too resulting in a better performing, more widely-available product they can sell in even greater quantities. NV48 makes so much sense for NV that I'm not sure why it doesn't look like being made available anytime soon. Maybe they're keeping it a close secret until showtime?
