Why is Source so efficient?

I dont think the Source engine is super efficient.

Source is heavily CPU dependant. Doom 3 uses very little CPU compared to Source. I get super smooth framerates in Doom with my xp 2200 and 9700pro. But, when i load up source I get abbysmal framerates even with all the eye candy turned off at 640x480.
yeah i think my 3000+ is to blame for frame dips in CS:S,escpecially against 20zombies all on screen at once with 5 guys unloading paras on em :p

Really? On my 1700+ and 9600 Pro I got good framerates at 1280x1024.

Dude, this game is average in my own opinion so STFU!

If you want to be a Valve fanb0y then that's fine, but I am entitled to my own opinion.

No. No you're not. Now when Attean is out and about. Never. Ever. No opinions. Bad Nowhereman. Bad. :D

I would venture a guess and say that halflife2 has much more objects to calculate physics for and such, thus needing more CPU cycles.

if im not mistaken, Doom3 had great physics and were showcased by the gravity gun rip off what was it? physics manipulator or something

Physics dont use up cycles unless their actually doing something and most of the time their not. =)

The seven years worth of development might have had something to do with it...

BTW, I agree that HL2 was far from being revolutionary. The Source engine was marvelous, but HL2 did little to progress the genre outside of the atmosphere and level of detail in the environment (And the environmental detail is questionable, considering we had Far Cry months before HL2 came out).

Everything above this sentence is an opinion not a fact.

It's a fact that they did a lot that hadn't been done before. They also improved on every facet the first game did well. This, in my "opinion", makes it pretty hard to call it merely average when you're talking about innovating what, in my "opinion", is one of the best games of all time.

Half Life 1 wasn't anything special either, but what it did it did well and it innovated in level design. Half Life 2 did the same in physics, continuity, and facial animation.

Look, we don't even need to have this conversation. I'm sure you all feel that you are right. It's like when you have something stuck on your mouth and no one tells you about it all day. I'm just giving you guys the heads up that you're wrong like I'd want you to do if I had that speck of something on my mouth (since that's about the only level you could ever critique me on) and letting you know that you are in fact completely wrong about Half Life 2 being average. You're welcome.

Well I like carrots, my friends don't. Does that make them wrong? No, it just mean they don't like carrots.

Valve just knows what there doing. People can hate on steam but they cant hate on the abilities of Valve.

I can hate all day on the abilities of Valve if I want to. That being said, I don't want to b/c I think source is a great engine :)

Don't you remember that HL2 was delayed almost a full year? Even if you bought the game on its first day on shelves, it was already a year old - of course if's going to run smoother than any other new game, it's a year old.

Yeah, let me tell ya I loved the graphical corruption that plagued early versions of hl2, as well as the memory access violations and hitching. Not to mention performance, hope no one else figures out you can get better frames by using five year old lighting techniques accompanied with outdated shadowing methods.

Tell me about it. I had more probls with HL2 than anything else, EVER! I suspect it was the onboard sound and just pushing the game settings really hard.

So consequently, Source seems like the least efficient engine I've played in ages for my particular video card.
