Why is my E8400 so hot?

I have an Antec 900 case full of fans.
Before I use to have a E4400 with the stock cooler and the idle temps accoding to Everst was in its 20's C.

Now I have put in a E8400 with a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 and the idel temps according to Everst is in its 40's C.
Is this normal???
 
A lot of people have reported that their idle temps never seem to go below 40C or so....I'm thinking it's an issue with the temp sensors. What does Everest say for the "CPU" temp? The core #1/core#0 temps on my e8400 showed around 39-41C idle, but the "CPU" sensor showed 33-34C.

Also, try the Realtemp sensor test to see if the sensors are stuck.
 
it reads:

CPU Core 1: 46C
CPU Core 2: 42C

I dont see one just for CPU, but the other temps are:

AUX: 34C (Don't know what this temp is)
HDD: 28C
Mobo: 18C

Is there another program good for detecting temps?

real temp or hw monitor.
 
Agree. Definitely calibrate RealTemp so you get accurate numbers.
Still, I think the more important temps to look at are load temps.
 
Make sure TJMax in RealTemp is set to 100 too. It'll show up even hotter. :(
 
Idle temps are meaningless, especially with Intel's newer DTSes. Do some load testing and forget about these idle numbers.
 
The E8400s have notoriously sketchy temp reporting. If your load temps are okay, I wouldn't worry about the idle temp too much. In addition, some of them have "stuck" sensors that will show a higher than actual minimum temp.
 
i have had 12 45nm cpu's. 3 or 4 of them suffered from the extremely high temperature thing. 2x e8400, 1x e8600 and a q9450. all of these were fairly normal, but hotter than average, at default. but any vcore added at all, even a minscule amount would raise the idle/load temps way out of scale. i have run into many other guys having this problem. i have tried swapping out hs/f, ir probe temp measuring, different mainboard, etc, and yes, it is running hot, it is not a problem with the sensors. the only answer i can come up with is bad contact between the ihs and the cores. the only thing you can do about it is get another chip, or live with it.
 
agree with everyone else, load temps are where the s1283 really shines
