Why is my CPU so cold? 28C!?

So here is the skinny.
I was having overheating problems because of all the dust in my CPU heatsink/fan.
I dusted it very well.
I added two front intake fans but they can't pull very much air in...I think. The front of my case is very solid with almost no holes.

So here are my current idle temps and such

During a recent 1 hour 30 minute expedition into Doom 3 I recorded my temp/fan/voltage readings.

Here is the breakdown:

CPU Temp: Minimum of 34C/93F Maximum of 38C/100F (was reached 3 times)
MB Temp: After about 10 minutes of playing the temp never changed from 32C/89F

CPU Fan was either: 2,986, 3,013 or 3,040 was reached 3 times
Power Fan (Enermax 430 Watt): was either 2,410, 2,428, 2,445, 2,463 or 2,481.

Volts:
+12V either 12.342 or 12.403
+5V either 5.187 or 5.214
3.3 Volt either 3.456 or 3.52
VCore usually 1.536 but 1.6 max

My CPU is cooled by the stock heatsink fan with some Arctic Silver on it.
The rest of my stuff is in the signature.
 
I checked in the bios as well. It says the same thing as ASUS' Probe program.
 
I have the same problem on my k8n pro board..it is reading the chipset temp heh..mines was 28 at idle too..i though it was my cpu ...then i used motherboard monitor 5 and the cpu was at 28-32 and the chipset one went up to like 50c and i was like wtf!! that must be my cpu heh...
 
So does this mean that my up-to-date bios are lying to me?

Is there a program out there that would be more truthfull than my bios and a Probe program made my manufacturer?

By "cough" I meant "dude, the guy just above you posted quite clearly that he used "Motherboard Monitor 5" in order to determine that his motherboard's temperature sensor was defective. Rather than being mean about it or flaming/trolling, I figured I would semi-humerously quote the guy's statement, put the appropriate phrase in bold, and just simply "cough". Obviously that didn't go as well as I had planned, so instead I will say this:

If you wish to monitor your motherboard's temperature settings using something other than the Asus probe & the like, use the program "Motherboard Monitor", which will not only give you temps, but also voltages and fan speeds. It is pretty much what everybody (that I know) uses, including myself, and I highly recommend it to you as well! :D
 
90% of the time the motherboard reports the wrong temperature. Your BIOS and ASUS PC probe would give the same results anyways.

Sorry about that. I installed it and again I got the same temperature readings. It says my CPU is 27C.

This 2.4C Pentium 4 must just be really cold.
 
Your chip is gonna produce more heat than anything else in your system. If you've got a block of copper averaging 26 deg C and air constantly running through thats 38 deg C, then the block of copper is going to approach and eventually reach 38 deg C. I mean think about it: an object in a system can't maintain a temperature LOWER than its surroundings, unless its taking heat and converting it into other forms of energy. CPUs take energy and convert it into heat, which is why ones CPU temp will always be higher than ones system temp (assuming things are reading, working, and set up correctly.)

Do this as a logical confirmation: Idle your comp and watch your temps. Then run Prime95 and load your CPU for 5 or 10 minutes, however long it takes. Compare your temps. Which temp reacted most dramatically?
 
Hum.. Northwood CPU are known to be very cool contrary to their cousin, the Prescott. Well, I am using Asus Probe too with a P4 3.4C @ 3.75GHz and I get 27ºC idle. There are a couple of thing to note however.

It's winter now, which makes a huge difference
My computer is in the basement
I am using top of the line air cooling
I have removed the side panel of my case
ambient air is like 19ºC..

So, you have to investigate some factor when you check temperatures. It gives nothing to whine about high temps when your computers sits in front of the window and that the sun streams directly on the case.

So many people are complaining about high temps of the Prescott. You should be happy that your processor runs that cool :cool:

my guess is that your mb temp and cpu temps should be switched.. the hottest one is probably our cpu..

now my comptuer is a little different the temp on my maxtor is the hottest, then the cpu, then the psu.. but generally the hottest one is the cpu... try sandra, everest, speedfan, and mbm.. and see what those say..
 
Yeh i wouldnt trust the Asus Probe let alone my mobo to tell me the correct temps, but i learn to live with it. I just use it to tell the difference in temp from idle to load, nothing more :p
 
I'll trade 'ya...your 28 for my 46...at idle...at stock speeds. :rolleyes:

Too funny, plus Tiny everest works great I had core cell, mobo monitor 5, and now everest. And the only one that was different was core cell by msi(mobo manufacture) other 2 say 33C while core cell said 37~39. but my sys is 47c.

PS I water cool cpu
 
I have a similar problem. before I installed my new psu I was getting cpu temps of around 30-35. now I'm getting temps around 18 the first time I reboot. If I restart, though, I get the temp back at around 30-35. It's damn strange but I'm not too worried about it. As long as my system is stable and quiet I'm happy
 
I also have a 2.4C with a asus mobo. I am watercooling it. I get idle temps @ 21-22 and load @28

so, maybe they just run cool
 
the p4c800 reads temps lower than actual, and the abit ic7 reads temps above actual...my temps are in the low 40's under load.
 
the real problem is that there is no standard for temp probe conformity. there is no set guideline for how motherboad manufacturers have to set the temp probes so that they all read the same way. so there really isnt a temp probe on a mobo that can be trusted. think about it 25 is room temp so how could blowing air be colder than room temp, even watercooling cant go below ambient temperatures. the only thing you can trust is to first try mbm5 and see if thats the cpu sensor and then touch teh heatsink and if its just warm then you are usually fine. if its burning to the touch then youve got a problem. also usually the temp sensors are underneath the socket where its the hottest and not right on the die where the actual temp is. if the hsf isnt boiling then youll be fine.
 
sorry to go off topic but can you tell me how you o'c with that mobo mentok1982? i have p4p800vm and it doesn't let me oc in bios
