my computer idles at 56, underload it gets hot... real hot.. like aroud 68-69, runs fine, no errors no crashs no nothing, but i still dont like it at that temp, at first i thought maybie i have a bad diode but i then i bothered to touch the heatsink (slk900u) and it was scalding hot, like you dont wana touch it for long hot, i got a panaflo 68cfm fan on it and it has good airflow, i just dont get why its so freakin hot, its a tbird b 2700, oced to 2200, 1.71V on an a7n8x delux, i've tried lowing the overclock back to stock speeds, but it still runs at same ultra high temp and the voltage will not go lower even though i set it to 1.65 in bios
any idea would be appreciated .

Using thermal paste, such as artic silver, for an example? If not, get some paste on there, but don't use artic silver for AMD Xp's, it will void your warrenty.

Hrmm, ok then.

What's your case temp's like? Hot as hell? How's the airflow? Are you cables tidy or messy and blocking airflow?

how much dust is there in ur computer? dust is a huge problem b/c it blocks the HSF from regulating air properly

Deffinately look at airflow inside the case.

If needed, consider getting one of those "badong" kits that allow you to exhaust your hot CPU air into a tube that goes directly out of your case. Designs that allow for direct exhaust often help out nicely in fixing CPU temp issues resulting from low airflow inside a case.

isn't that mutch of an indicator, but the air blowing out hte back of the case was cool, although i had 4+1 fans blowing air out and only 2 blowing in and it kinda caused no air to get to my video card so now i have the door cracked and a fan on the side of video card and that problem fixed: there is alot dust in this apt but i clean the heatsink off with spray air every couple of weeks and like i said there is good airflow on the heatsink i can feel it, also as stated the heatsink is crazy hot, so its seated correctly i just cna't keep the damn thing cool, i wonder if chip somehow broken and putting off extra heat or something

What's your ambient temp ( room temp ) like? Hot? Can you get something to measure the heatsink's temp with? Maybe even the cpu's temp?

Is the fan moving the air over the hsf as per the hsf design?

artic silver will void warranties for AMD XPs?
how?, why?

It's partly conductive, check the amd site, it's there somewhere, i had an AMD XP 2200, put some AS3 on it, went zap after a few hrs of running. Took it back and no warrenty as i used AS3.

AS may rock, but it does contain metal.

Since there is a increased chance of shorts from using metal paste, any hardware manufactureres will not accept units that have had these compounds applied to them.

If you care about your warranty, go for arctic alumina, or ceramique. I tend to use AS3 for my main rig, but if I'm doing stuff on someone else's machine (like my mom's) I'm using the alumina.

ok... as voiding warrentys is just stupid... did they compleatly forget that even there stock heatsink has a COPPER core... copper... i mean come on.. you cant get much more conductive than that... i could see it as a problem if your an idjot and try to cover the entire substraight with the stuff and it shorts out bridges... but when properly applyed it is no more conductive than the heat sink your trying to stick on there

Exacty why it voids warranty.

Metallic compound isn't exactly industry standard. Silicone/aluminum oxide pastes are the standard, what we are using is something else. It's much like strapping a turbo onto your honda's engine, then trying to get honda to replace your engine block when it gets messsed up.

Aftermarket performance and warranties tend to not go hand in hand, its the nature of the beast.

If you read your warranty book carefully it says that using an aftermarket heatsink will also void your warranty.

Warrenties are overrated, and you've already voided it anyway, so, whatever. Reseat the heatsink, clean off the core and bottom of the heatsink GOOD with rubbing alcohol, then use a LITTLE dab of AS3 in the middle of the core, then put the heatsink on, it will spread the AS3, since its under pressure. Thats should fix it.
