They get the bleeding edge technology in their high end systems before you and me can even find them to purchase. If Dell sold AMD, their high end systems would already be selling with SLI configurations and NForce4 Chipsets. I can't tell you who makes their motherboards, or who makes their ram, but they will be using the latest technology available.
Dell doesnt necessarily use cheap parts, but they do try to cut a corner if they can get away with it. Not saying I blame them, they are a business to make profit. Coming from someone who worked at Dell testing their various components, of what I can say, they do use some good stuff, but I wouldnt put it up against the stuff people build systems with on their own. The stuff they buy in the end is still OEM grade.
Also, SLI is working with Intels too. Not that I think Dell would go for SLI in the first place. It would occur to me that they wouldnt see the demand in it. It was hard enough trying to get them to think like a gamer to produce their XPS systems. Heck trying to get more colors schemes and a window proved impossible. It isnt till now with their Gen 4 version are we even getting some of things we wanted to put in on Gen 1... But that is all I can say on that subject...
