Jus somethin im curious about here. and feel free to tell me if im being stupid, but. How come you can over volt ram by 0.4volts, and above if u have the appropriate hardware. Processors can take a sturdy 0.2 volt increase with adequate cooling. But i keep getting ppl telling me that adding an extra 0.1volts to my 6800GT will kill it within a very short period. Even tho it isnt always in 3d mode, and it has very adequate cooling

I dont know much about volt modding, but I guess gpus were just not made to take a certain a mount of voltage. Notice how much trouble it is to adjust GPU voltage as opposed to how easy it is to adjust RAM and CPU voltage.

When you vmod a GPU most likely you should have at least an NVsilencer5.

your 6800gt probably came at 1.2v stock, i have heard mixed things about vmodding up to 1.3-1.5 territory, its all chance really. Some cards can take it like a man and hold out for years some buckle under the voltage and go in a few months.

As to WHY gpus cant take more votlage, my guess would be is that they run spicy hot and can't use huge heatsinks like cpus can.

My GT has been modded to 1.4 and goes to 440@1.20 nicely w/ NVS + AS5 befor that it crashed like crazy

My card came runnin at 1.3 stock. Upped it to 1.4 for a few hours to see what results i could get. they were VERY pleasing. But after reading horror stories i put it back to 1.3. As for the spicey hot thing, i only saw a 6C increase in temps under HEAVY load. So i dunno... i dont wanna burn out my card. But i'd love the extra juice!

its most likely because the card's OTHER components arent made to handle the voltage requirements the GPU would need should it be drawing 1.4v. the Ultra comes stock with 1.4, do me a favor and compare an Ultra and GT PCB and you will see taht the ultra has more Mofsets and Capacitators needed to handle supplying the core with that extra .1v, not to mention the second molex. its not that the GPU cant take it, its that the voltage regulators cant... they are rated for 1.3 and dont like going above it.

Good answer litium. BFG know that ppl LOVE to OC their kit. But i guess it would be a bit of a money waster for them if they sold a midrange 6800 that could out do a top of the range one with a little tweaking. Does anyone kno of any methods to make the cards capable of that increase. Iv read a few threads in here of 6800 standards running 1.5v!! for a long time and stable. I think that my GT wont OC as well on this mobo cus my PSU is crappin on me. THe overclocked A64 must be takin too much juice from me
