After extensive research (and trial-and-error), I have discovered that any ATI driver does not want to work with my machine. Specs are:

- nForce 3 250GB
- ATI 9800pro
- 1 Gig RAM
- Sempron 3100+

For the past two years I haven't had any problems with games or stability, nothing is o/ced. After I install the drivers, the machine goes to a crawl (CPU is always at 100% even idle). I've tried the following drivers and cleaned out each driver in safe mode with DC Pro.

- 6.5
- 5.8
- 5.6
- 5.4
- Omega Drivers (both old and new)
- Windows Update drivers
- Original drivers (CD)

When I boot into safe mode, the machine perfectly fine and stable, it's only when I install any type of video drivers that starts this mess. I've switched with a GeForce 3 Ti500 and it ran perfectly fine. Help?

I've tried even with the Catalyst Drivers, re-installed XP SP2 and it didn't do a thing.
 
If the card has never run properly then it sounds like a hardware problem.

Could be bad power supply or bad video card.

Don't suppose you'd have a different ATI card to pop in and test?
 
The card was made by ATI and it always worked without a problem for the past two years. I highly doubt it could be a bad PSU, its a NeoPower 480W. I don't have a second Radeon Card, sorry :(
 
Try testing the card in another computer, see if the problem follows the video card....
 
My 9800pro did something similar, but on a NF2 platform.. It turned out that I had 2 issuses that hit me at the same time..

1: 100% cpu usage and general instability with newest NForce reference AGP drivers.. .. I use the ones on the mobo manufacturers website, and those problems went away..

2: Also had minor artifacting in games.. Removing, cleaning, re-applying thermal paste, and re-installing heatsink fixed problem..

It may not help you, but can't hurt to try..
 
I updated the BIOS and that didn't help (MSI LiveUpdate so I couldn't have screwed that up) and it didn't do much good. I also cleared the BIOS just in case to make sure that that wasn't the issue, nothing worked.

I yanked out my brother's 6800GS and installed the drivers, no problems so far. I can't test out the card on his PC because it is the family machine, I can't afford to lose that thing. My guess is probably faulty hardware but it sure doesn't seem like it, there aren't any burnt marks and it was never overclocked.

UPDATE: The 6800GS is also having the same problems, motherboard faulty?
 
Try these 2 things:

1) Disable Fast Writes in BIOS
2) Uninstall the nForce3 GART drivers (AGP)

Did them both and nothing happened... double sigh
 
Try updating dot net. It's a shame but ATi drivers on your machine make a sytem dog slow many seconds after bootup. Dual core too. I don't even try to do anything until the driver loads. Identifiable by a quick flash of black. On my Fw900/Crossfire rig anyways. Maybe your driver load is crashing or not completing successfully.

Everything is to the latest version. I waited 30 minutes and it didn't help either. I wouldn't think so since I tried so many drivers and re-installed XP so many times that I memorized the key. This might be the most difficult problem that I've ever had to deal with this machine.
 
Screw all this, I'm going to use this as an excuse to uprade my system as its old anyways. My guess is faulty mobo but I really don't care to find out anymore, Conroe (possibly) here I come.
