Why does no one use UMC any longer?

I remember a few years back, both ATI and NVIDIA were using UMC to build chips, how come they don't anymore?

It seems strange to me to think that TSMC would be that far ahead of them in process

They do use UMC, but only as a secondary supplier. UMC can't possibly pull the load, because they have significantly less capacity versus TSMC:

UMC has two 300mm fabs with a total capacity of 60,000 wafers per-month. These are the only TSMC fabs running advanced process nodes.

TSMC has two 300mm fabs with a total capacity of 150,000 wafers per-month. They have five other 200mm fabs, but it's not possible to see what node each operates at. But that means worst-case TSMC has 2.5x the production of UMC.

This is why the industry doesn't care about UMC. TSMC is the one that will make-or-break a product launch.
