Why Does No One Talk About Projectors ?

I only see threads around asking about LCD's and CRT's, but why diesnt anyone talk about Projectors ?
My buddy has one, and I watched him play Dungeon Siege on it about a year ago, that baby has a screen image of approx 100" :eek: :eek: :eek: that makes my 21" CRT look like a cell phone display :D

I havent seen any shooters like Ut2004 or RavenShield on it, but if I was in the market for a higher end monitor, you cant even compare 100" to even the 23" Apple, thats like 1/4 the size.

Opinions ?
 
I think price is a major reason,. Im not sure how much a nice quality projector is, but it has to be out of the range of most people 's pocketbook.
 
Value. $1200 gets you a very nice 20-inch+, 1600x1200 LCD (Samsung 213T, Viewsonic VP201, etc.) or a mediocre 800x600 projector.

Not to mention that a $1200 projector will force you to shut the curtains and turn off the lights because cheap projectors aren't very bright. Color accuracy and small text is bad on projectors, so it's really only good for gaming and movies.
 
Well, I am in fact doing some research on buying one, they are very expensive, but I think if you find a good compromise between quality and price, it's a good long term investment, you might never have to buy another monitor again.
I'll be honest though, I don't know much about projectors, I'm just kinda wading in and seeing how deep the water is, so I really would like to know what people think about this topic as well, perhaps someone with some personal experience? I could use some info to lead me in the right direction as to what to look for when buying one... biggest pros and cons? :)
 
The projector bulbs are expensive and need to be replaced periodically.
 
I just bought a projector last week and I'm very happy, yes, even with my "mediocre" 800x600 resolution, the dim light, the poor color accuracy, and small text. Oh and there are rainbows too.

hehe, you must be one of those people that don't ever complain about anything, no matter how bad it is.

I would, personally, be having a fit over al that stuff, lol.
 
So,,, do you use it instead of using a monitor? or just for games/movies/etc?

LOL oh hell no. I complain about everything. I can't think of any examples right now, but it's really easy to set me off.

I think it's just a matter of knowing what you are getting yourself into. If someone purchases a CRT monitor do they have a right to complain about the weight? If a person goes LCD, can they complain about ghosting? Unless you have an unlimited amount of money, you have to compromise somehow. After determining which compromises you are willing to make you go with your best option.

I wanted a huge screen. First I considered a 24" LCD, but that's only 24" for $2500. Plasmas start at $3000 and generate a huge amount of heat, which just won't work in my small room. I cannot fit a rear projection unit into an 8.5'x11' if it also needs to be a sleeping and working area. Front projection seemed to be the best possible option. It's also ridiculously portable, and since I'm currently at college, size and weight are important issues.

As for compromises, sure the 800x600 is a bit low but DVDs only have 480 lines of resolution anyway. I realize they would still look better on a high-res projector but at the very least, I'm not missin anything. Additionally, the projector I got (the BenQ PB6100) can scale all the way up to 1280x1024 resolution. Sure it doesn't look the greatest, but if I want to browse the web I have no problem reading the text, especially on an 80" screen (don't have the throw distance for 100" :( ;)).

The dim light is an issue during the day, but I tend to wake up after noon and go to sleep around 5 a.m., so I have no problems watching things at night. I'm practically nocturnal! If I wanted to watch during the day I'd just go to Walmart and pick up some dense black cloth to hang over my window for $20 and be done with it.

To me, the color accuracy seems fine too. Heck, the black levels on my projector are better than on my computer monitor (a Dell 2001FP).

The small text was just a copy and paste of whatever that guy above said. I haven't seen a problem.

Of all my compromises, it is actually the rainbowing that bugs me the most, but this is an issue with all DLP projectors. I think I may just sell my projector in a month or two and spend an extra $300 to get one with a higher speed color wheel to alleviate the problem.

All in all, the compromises are fairly minor. How many people actually get projectors to do everyday work on anyway? You really only need a 100" screen for games and movies, and even my cheap projector manages those just fine.

I use it mainly for movies, but if I'm using it and feel like taking a break from a movie to browse the web I jsut do that instead of switching to my regular monitor.
 
projectors are awesomely fun, played nba2k2 on it 8ft screen, and watched wrestlemania 10ft great. only problems i have with it is that its noisy sometimes (stupid fan), i don't know how much the lens might cost, and some of them are not particularly clear with the sun and everything it has to be complete darkness with a good amount of distance away to get the best image. frankly i think its worthless unless u have a high ceiling with no light and good amount of distance away from the wall your projecting it on, other then that's its really fun especially if u can get it outside for a party or something and make sure no one walks in front of it or u can punch them which is fun.

I have a compaq MP1600 which is 1024x768, which is the resolution i use on my 17 crt anyway. I've paid 322 euros shipping and all from ebay. The collors are a tad off, but with adobe gama, it gets better. It's nice for watching films, gaming i don't know. Reading on it is sometimes tiring. And you can't just shut it off like a tely, as it has to cool down. But other than that, i wouldn't sell it without buying a new one. I'd like to add something to truffle00's post. It's great for getting birds into your bedroom. Come and watch a film on my big screen, when she realise that the only place to sit on in your bedroom/computer room, is the bed!!!!!!! There's no turning back, don't rush it, and after a few films, over a fortnight, she'll be confident enough to fall asleep in your bed, and we know what hapens next, as well, they often think you're more clever and well off because you have a big screen. Serves more than one purpose! Screen for comp, for videos and games, plans with autocad or else might be good on thoses too.

I bought an X1 at the end of December and I must say that I have no regrets. I had tried out a more expensive projector, but ended up coming back to the X1 due to the price. At one time I could see the rainbow effect (because I was looking for it), I don't see at anymore. Its definately a crowd pleaser.
 
I use a CRT and I play on it every now and then, usually I just watch movies on it.

a buddy of mine brought over his projector over the weekend. Played some UT204 and Worms 3D on it. Looks drop dead gorgeous at 1280x720. DVDs look amazing, and the colors were very rich. There's something about sitting in front of a 8' screen playing UT that's just plain awesome, even if the quality isn't the best compared to my 2001FP, it's very cool. I plan on picking up a projector in the next 6 months...until then my basement wall holds the screen we built.
 
I just got a projector on friday and If I had not gotten such a deal I would have just got a large lcd. The bulbs for my projector cost way too much (400.00) Then theres the screen and the setup.
I do have to say the damn thing is awesome and once you get one setup you will not want to go back.
 
you can build a screen for 40 bucks. Head to a fabric store and get some blackout cloth. (it's what you use to sew into the lining of curtains. Stretch it over some 1x3s and you are good to go. Sure it might not be as good as that 500-1000 dollar screen, but for the cost difference it's not really that much worse.
 
Well my brother has a projector that scales to like a 300inch moniter, but we leave it at 100inches. It is cool, to play games and surf. But one problem that plagues them is they tend to get washed out by light. Playing a game during daylight sucks. Of course unless you have the room completly dark. Oh yeah, bulbs can be expensive.
