Why does my 6800GT suck (sometimes)?

I've kept quiet for the last couple months as I didn't want to feel bad about laying down over $400 on a new video card, but I finally have to admit that my 6800GT is seriously frustrating me in UT2k4. The image quality in the game is around the same as the 9800, except that the colors seem to be way oversaturated compared to the 9800. My biggest peeve is even in 1v1's on a smaller map with either 8/16X anio, 1280X1024 (or higher), and no anti-aliasing when you view certain areas of the map (like a big room with lots of geometry) the framerates go into the yellow zone and sometimes hiccup in the red zone (below 30 fps). Though the overall framerates in UT2k4 are better then the 9800pro I had, the 6800GT cant hold a constanly high framerate. I have the quality set to "quality" so every optimization is on, but when I tried turning off the optimizations the performance hit was absolutely devastating. Most new games (opengl, DX9) feel really fast (doom3-probably never play that again, farcry, etc), but it seems that some games just aren't smooth.

high AF and AA will give a BIG FPS hit bring down you AF abit

I never use AA and the I have my AF usually at 8X, the same I used on my 9800pro.

Overall I have been very impressed with my GT. Far Cry looks great. BUT, I play a lot of UT2k4 and the performance also has been less than stellar. I upgraded from an overclocked 9800np and although performance is better, Its not nearly the delta I see on other games.

I have noticed the same thing when gaming. Some games are clearly better with my GT, some are just slightly faster than my 9800 Pro was...

That is because the GT is way ahead of UT 4 , UT 4 is CPU bound big time and old technology. Far Cry and Doom and Half life are Frankly , the only titles that i believe you will see a siginificant difference in performance although i must say UT4 looks fabulous to me with the Ultra.

If you wanted to play games like UT2K4, you should have gone the X800 XT route. I'd recommend selling your card and buying an XT if you're unhappy with the GTs performance in your fps games.

I wouldnt say UT4 is old technology, in fact I'd say its new technology. Any game that pushes the components of a computer, either CPU or video, is an advance. Complex physics are still done primarily with the CPU. FarCry does not play much better on the GT than it does on the 9800 Pro, at least not at mid resolutions like 1024 x 768, but at higher resolutions, yeah the GT is a definite improvement as long as you crank the details to max.
I have to say though that I feel the R300 core series of cards from ATi was a bigger step up when released than the 6800 series. The 6800 series is more like the frosting where the R300 series cards where the whole cake, we never saw an increase in graphics splendor as large as the R300's provided. In fact I'd say visualy the latest generation from ATi and nVidia has nothing on the R300's visualy, they just do everything a bit faster...

Its because your fan doesn't blow (all the time).
See that is the problem with computers and thier homosexual tendencies. If one part decides to not put out, the other doesn't slow down... it goes down.

and you can sig me on that!

you know havinv owned the 9700 pro and the 9800xt and generally i think your correct as far as visual splender with one maybe two exceptions

Far Cry blew me away with my Gt and even more so with the Ultra using pixel shader 3.0 and instancing as compared to my 9800xt. Visual quality was improved and of course speed and subsequently game play at a higher resolution was the icing on the cake. I really cant address Dooom3 since I have only played it on the Ultra but I am quite satisfied. I feel the same satisfaction going from the 9800xt that i did going to the 9700 pro way back when. I was dissapointed at the mere incremental increase in performance going from 9700 t0 9800xt.

I will end my beer induced articulation with this.: Hicupp
