Some recent discussion in here has made me wonder what draws you guys to video games (PC, Console, or whatever). I can guess at some probable reasons, but I want to hear what you all say.

Why do you play video games?

For me, it's because they're fun - it's like a movie - an escape from the regular world.

cuz its what I grew up with...i'll prolly play games til I can't anymore.

Entertainment.

People get entertained sitting on their computers checking facebook/myspace I like gaming.

Um, anyone care to explain to me the point of this thread...

People will either answer truthfully and say "for entertainment," or "for fun," or will just mess around.

Because, really, who doesn't play video games for fun? What else would you play games for? It's like asking people why they eat food.

Dingdingdingdingding!!!!!!

Theres only one answer, Entertainment. I don't understand this thread...

Entertainment factor, or to relax, or to just not think about work for a while :D

I keep quite busy with PC games, Dreamcast, Playstation and PS2 (and eventually the 360).

I've always been a big fan of the rpg's and immersing myself in worlds that other people have brought about through their ideas. The plots usually keep me going in games. That or the opportunity to blow things up.

Because they are fun.

Sometimes I enjoy mindless activities. Sometimes I want to be challenged. Sometimes I want something somewhere in the middle. Sometimes I want to hear a good story or see some good action.

Games can satisfy all of those things.

Why does the sun shine? Why do birds flock south? Same reason why I play video games; I'm unattractive and I can't get laid.

It helps make life less sucky? Life is mostly giving up more for less. Games are (in theory) designed to entertain you, and life is not. That's why escapism is great. It's just better than reality.

video games are a way to relax for me, i also find it to be a stress reducer. Nothing can help me get over a bad day like popping a few guys in CSS. I also enjoy the social aspect of gaming, ive made some friends over games.

Because they're fun. You might as well start a thread about why people watch porn, listen to music, masturbate, etc. and you'll get the same answer.

I play video games because I've been playing since I was 5 years old and thats really been my hobby ever since and it's all I've ever really known as a recreational activity other than some minor physical activities. That and they're a very good way to relieve stress.Where some of the people I know drink or do illegal substances to relieve stress, I play video games...they're my anti drug?

I play games because I'm a very competitive person, and like to be better than everyone else at something.

i play because its fun and im addicted, and well because i've been doing it for like 25 years ( holy sh!t  ) so why stop now :p

Another reason why I thought of: You only live once. Do what makes you happy.

I'm happy playing video / PC games. :p

Primarily entertainment, followed closely by escapism, follwed by interactivity (I'm the sort of person who needs to keep my mind active all the time) and last but not least the reward of competative play, I like to win.

I started playing video games a loooooooooooong time ago. I remember playing on a unit looked almost exactly like the atari before atari. It had 3-4 games in it all roughly based around pong. There was Pong Tennis and two others I cant remember. Got an atari for x-mas when they were new and played daily against my dad.

I think I've owned every console since except coleco and intellivision. I even had a C64 and a 128 later on. Mail order Monsters is still my all time favorite game. So simple in design and one of the first PvP games that allowed customization of your character.

Video games have been such a part of my life growing up I can't imagine a day not spending atleast 1 hour on them. I don't really consider it a hobby more as apart of my daily life.

Because I find it entertaining. It's fun and I enjoy playing games. It is as simple as that.

I play GTA so I can learn how to beat hookers with baseball bats and steal their money.

I play video games, in order to pass the time, and escape from the reality of my current situation. I cannot wait until I am able to leave the job I am at currently, which I have moral and ethical objections against.

there really aren't any good thumb and finger workout machines at the gym

Because dressing in blue paint, leather armor then running around with my pet white tiger is generally looked down upon in real life...plus that whole Sigfried and Roy thing...much safer with the virtual tiger...

keeps me out of the trouble id surely find myself in if i didnt game.

edit: might as well throw competition in there also... the former statement is just a good side effect of this really.

I know some people who hate the games but they play the games on Xbox 360 because they are achievement whores. Glad I never fell into that category.

If what you say its true you need a serious slap in the face and to go here:

www.doubleyourdating.com

If not then you have an acid sense of humor, any other way, all I have to say to you is this:

1: Get a big piece of paper and write: YSSUW
2: Stick it to your forehead.
3: Go to the bathroom
4: Look at the mirror.
5: In case you haven't guessed read what it says.
Slap yourself in the face.

Go to the site.

P.S. This is not ads, it actually works.

P.S.S. I still play games though and even invite women to acompany me.

I don't either.

I have a hunch.

The guy's feeling guilty for some reason (addiction to games), or something else than guilt related to addiction. Then he asks the rest of the population to compare himself to the rest, as you see, gaming is not for "nerds" anymore. Or maybe just plain curious, which is much much unlikely.

I have been gaming since I was five and started with king quest I and space invaders. Been gaming for 21 years now.

It just comes naturally to me.

Cause it's fun, and you can't go around blasting people with guns in real life. I grew up playing games too, I mean I was playing FPS games when I was six.

It's fun and a nice difference in type of entertainment from reading or watching movies just to have a change of pace. Being able to have fun with friends at lans is awesome. Some of the stories in the games are just so good and engrossing. Plus, it's something to do while recovering from a few hours of working out :)
