Not bashing, asking. I have folded in the past, but I stopped because I wasn't sure what I was really doing.

What makes you want to fold? Is it the competition for points, knowing you are helping research, or because you wanna use that badass rig :cool:

Share your thoughts and influence me :)
 
I'll be honest originally it was for the points the competition, however cancer has affected people I know and love to much to not fold.

14 years old died from cancer up his spine, i have an uncle dieing from cancer around his throat.

these are the reasons I fold none other

I'm looking to get a badass rig just to fold. Ya, I might play a game or two on it... but it is really for Folding.

Why fold? to better humanity... to find a cure... to provide others with hope.

I have had plenty of cancer in my family.

I have had plenty of cancer in my extended family consisting of co-workers, their kids, and their parents.

Cancer sucks. :mad:






 
I had been Folding since 2001 or so. But I lost my father-in-law to skin cancer 2 months ago, and guess what? We just found out yesterday that my mother has breast cancer (at least they caught it very early and she has a good chance)...

It had been an altruistic act that might benefit me at some later date, but now it's personal.
 
My Mother is a brest cancer survivor and my dad died of complications from the cancer treatment. I'd like to see us whip some of it.
 
Excuse my ignorance but I actually thought folding was just for looking for Extra Terrestrial Life and that kind of thing. Hearing what you guys have said has made me think about doing it.
 
Join us and help find a cure, there are a lot of different medical problems that the misfolding of protiens are responsable, not just cancer. I have built and am running 24 boxen just to fold, and trying to update them all the time.

to me it started as a good Idea for my computer to do something while it was sitting all day doing almost nothing, now it is a major part of my life.

Cancer, Alziemers, Cystic fibroses, and other disease's have affected alot of people I know and love. Every one of my boxes has a name and that person has a disease that we could cure or has died because we haven't found one yet.

To me it a personal quest to help everyone I can,

You are thinking of SETI@Home. That's the search for Extra Terrestrial life.

Most folks around here are of the opinion that Folding@Home has a much better goal. ;)

 
I fold mainly for gimmick and giggles. But that has changed around a month ago when I discovered that my uncle had cancer, underwent treatment. AFAIK he's doing well now but I dont know anything more than that.

So this so far is the only sole reason why I run F@H.

Prior to this I had ran as Jon855 for three other teams, and before that I ran UD a while ago before going to F@H.
 
I can't say that I or my family has ever had cancer. One of my grandmothers developed a case of alzheimers, but that's about the worst of it. That being said, I don't really fold for my benefit. No. I fold for the people out there that aren't as fortunate. I fold knowing that what I'm doing is currently helping those researchers out there do their jobs better so that we might one day have a cure for some of these cancers and diseases. And I also fold because of the rest of the folders of the [H]... you guys really are a great bunch of folks! :D

Well there's no guarantee it'll benefit you personally, but it well might at some point. I consider it in my best self-interest to Fold, ya never know what'll come of it, and at least it may help someone else after I'm dead and gone.

There's plenty of other diseases that are mis-folded protein related besides cancer to be worried about as well.

You're right... I guess I did overlook some of the other diseases that are also currently being researched because of this project.... and I'm not discounting the possibility that I or another friend or family member will be affected in some way by any one of these afflictions. Nonetheless, I fold right now because it's in humanity's best interests.... and it's fun!
 
I fold because my mother has terminal Alzheimer's Disease. I fold in the hope that biomolecular research from projects like Folding@Home produce prevention/treatments/cures for any of the many diseases caused by misfolded proteins.

Mom has not known me or any other family member except sometimes my father for 5 years now but continues on in some kind of partial awareness. Some days she speaks sentences, some days she cannot put 3 real words together. She still wants & needs love and that is heartbreakingly apparent with every visit.

My son has cancer (retinoblastoma), I ad it when I was a baby and lost an eye to it, but it almost killed me. My dad had it when he was a baby and it almost killed him. RB is a very deadly form of cancer that if it isn't caught in time will spread directly to the brain, then it's a whole other ballgame.

I was folding with the hope that when my son is 35 and has his first child, the risk of him passing on RB will be minimal if not gone. Right now, I'm not folding, but once I get my C2D going again, you bet your ass I will be again.

I also have a little cousin with CF. Well she's 15 now, but she's still little to me, I watched her grow up with all the problems CF causes, and the fear that her parents have that the next time she gets hospitalized she isn't coming home.

I have began folding on my main rig and my laptop. Let's just say, my room is now 10 degrees hotter :p
 
I do it to support science, which not enough people do these days as far as I am concerned. My mom did survive breast cancer too, but I'm not sure of F@H's contribution towards that type of cancer.
 
I fold for good karma.. And to help people. I always try to help people out as much as I can... and if I can lend a hand by letting a program run in the background, whats the harm?
 
I fold because it's the right thing to do. I have literally no reason not to. I can afford the extra power usage, so why not put my pretty decent (and rather expensive) rig to a good use.

So it folds 24/7. Doesn't matter if I'm watching a movie, surfing the web, or playing a game. The client never gets disabled. Only time I'm not running it is if I'm working on increasing my overclock, since all the restarting isn't really conductive to folding.

 
For the science, for the folding community, for the [H]orde, for the points, and the hope to be Folder of the Month some day ;)
