OK, so I was just doing some shopping at Costco (grestest place for food for a BBQ) and I stopped to look at the computers they have there. Their best computer was a Sony with a 3.6 GHZ Intel, 1GB of PC3200 Ram (no idea what type), 200GB HDD, and a X300 graphics card. The thing that got me was that it played Battlefield 2 in not to bad of a fashion. I never thought that an X300 could play BF2 let alone doing it with not much lag in picture. My quesion is, why does the x300 work in this computer with bf2 and does it always work with these games. Also, if a x300 can play it, what would be a good card for 200 or less to get even better results?
 
But how could the x300 work that well (not amazing but still) on BF2 when I have heard of people saying that almost 2 GB of memory would be good for this game.

It's called low res and lower details really. The 2gb of ram is only because the game is poorly coded texture wise. Once you set textures to Medium, 768MB of ram would be enough.

yup, 19 in monitors that runs at 800x600
 
I am not sure that the res was that bad. It could have been meaning that I might not have to play at very high ones which may save me some $$$. Which would the be the very best for 200?

Tell me about it, I have a 7800gtx and 1gb of Corsair XMS RAM and I have to set the textures to medium to get stutter-less play. Yet my freind who has 1GB of RAM and has a x850xt says he gets no stutter at all with the settings maxed, what gives?
 
If you can find one a 6800nu would be best, with Gddr3 ram and try for the unlock, assuming you are talking about AGP. Otherwise a 6600gt would own an X300 like no body's business.

Or....Costco could be deceiving you by saying that the PC on the shelf has a X300 when in fact it has a X800 XT inside.

That would or should be illegal.

Well, perception of the smoothness is one thing. What your friend might not notice you might. I guarantee you its not stutter free. Even on my 7800GTX I wouldn't call it perfect.

He may also have textures set to medium and not know it. I had my textures revert back to medium when I set them to high when I first got the demo. Don't know why. The game looked good, but then I noticed some screen shots that looked better than what I was playing, so I went and re-checked my in game video options and sure enough the damn thing was set back to medium. I cranked the res, and the game looked TONS better. It did however take a performance hit. I noticed it right away.

No, I checked in the deivce manager and it was an X300. I want to go PCIE so what is the best in that category?

The best PCI-E card is the 7800GTX. However its not $200.00.

the 6800nu's don't have gddr3 memory, just ddr. I think a 6800nu with gddr3 would be a 6800gto, unlocked pipes and with gddr3 it would be a 6800gt

I think you are correct. I know the 6600gts have the gddr3 of ram.

I'd like to know too. I'm forced to play at max res and settings and I do see some stuttering with my 6800 Ultra OC'ed. I wonder if 2 GB's of memory will do the trick.

Yeah but then I said PCI-E and I wasnt sure because I have seem the x800pro or the 6800 for 200 also so I wasn't quite sure. Does everyone think this or is this the best route?

I'm sure 2GBs would make it stop stuttering, but either my freind is lieing, or he really does have stutter-less play with 1GB, I don't get it.
 
OK but still is the x800 the best for around 200 or should i look at like the pro or 6800 or 6600GT or what?
 
an x800 is underrated imo...people always recommend the 6800nu in that price range, but the x800 keeps up with the 6800 as far as i know. If you can get an x800xl then get it, if not then go with the 6800/x800.

If you can find a PCIe version of the X800Pro for $200 go for it, it'll perform great for that price range. Chances of you doing that are low though, so grab the X800 which you can probably find for around $180 in PCIe compared to the $230ish 6800nu in PCIe.

The X800 at stocky actually performans slightly better than the 6800nu. The X800Pro better than them both, but finding that card in PCIe at that price would be hard to do, and if you wanted to raise your price then I'd say get the X800XL at $250.

If you want to go with AGP (if this is a new computer I wouldnt) then just grab yourself a 6800nu and be done with it. Or search really hard for a X800 Pro.

Either way, AGP = 6800nu at your given price range, or PCIe = X800.

X800 is actually slightly faster at stocky, but not enough to warrant the price difference if you're going AGP. And if you're going PCIe then you're in luck because not only is the X800 slightly faster, but its cheaper in PCIe than the 6800nu.

Your friend is lying to you. I have a 850xtpe and i had 1gb ram.. I'd get stutters here and there.. most of the time it was fine though. When I took my machine to 2 gigs I have no stutters.. ^-^
 
i bought a BFG 5500 to play BF2 in my emachines.

drop it in low res and i have no lag at all. i paid 100 bucks for that card.
