Why do programs keep opening on the wrong display?

So I have two 22" monitors that I use for my desktop, and a 40" tv that I watch movies and such on. My desktop is extended to the 40" tv but I only turn the tv on when I am going to watch a movie or something.

All the time I will open a document or a program and it will appear on the tv, but because the tv is off I have to turn it on to see the document and move it back over to my monitors. This is a huge pain in the ass. Sometimes I can just right click and select move, but a lot of the time it won't move, or I will have to click around and try to blindly drag it over.
MS Word is the worst at this.

It seems like normally a document will appear on whatever display it was last closed on, but Word ignores this and opens on my tv 90% of the time.

Can't remember the key stroke, but it's either Control+exit or Left Shift+exit or maybe even Control+Left Shift+exit and it "saves" it to open on that monitor.

I meant Close. Like the white X in the red box at the top right. I can't think of what that button is called.

You can also use ultramon to assign a hotkey to automatically move a selected window (which you can do via alt-tab or the task bar) to the next monitor.

I'm afraid that none of those are working for me.

Also, I've noticed that Word only does this when I have a word document open already but it is minimized. If I have a word document open and it is not full screen then the second document will open on top of the first.
