i don't get it. there is like a 10 dollar price difference against the maxline3, but you gain 2 more years of warranty and 'supposedly' better build quality. anyone know why? just trying to figure it out b4 i place my order.

Shhhhhh! Don't rage against the machine (it's already been done... lol :D )

It's real simple.

Many of us are really nostalgic if we hang on to a drive for 3 years. Within the next 2 years, there will (hopefully) be something bigger and faster than the DM10/MLIII. What does an extra 2 years of warranty mean if you don't even have the drive for that time period?

Now, the longer warranty may improve the drive's resale value in places like FS/T, or it may be an obsolete worthless victim of the Next Big Thing in Storage 3 years from now. Maxtor may not even exist in 3 years. This industry moves fast, and banking on things for years is a risky proposition.

Now, with that said, the ML may make sense for you. If you are serious about keeping the drive for its entire life cycle, and it will still be a front line unit in years 4 and 5, then throwing down the cash for the better drive and warranty makes sense. But that is a long time from now.

However, realize that when they both first came out, it was not "just $10 more" it was quite a premium, $70+, and on many sites it still is.

If it's only $10 more, then I'd go for the extended warranty. If the drive fails during that latter 2 year period, then think of the money you didn't have to spend for a new drive.

Extended warranties for such little extra money are worth it in the long run IMHO.
