Why do pirates pirate? (Why do crows crow?)

Its simple economics. When something costs zero dollars, everyone wants it. When it costs $50 less people are willing to buy it.

I don't find the companies who make the games completely innocent though either. Take the newest crysis:warfare release. Reports of it being beaten in less then 3 hours is not worth the extravagant amount they're asking you to pay. IMO So people go out and pirate it thinking somehow they are beating the system or getting what they deserve from being ripped off in the past. Or battlefield 2 and their ranking system preventing custom maps/mods being made to "force" people to buy their expansions which were just skin changes.

I personally wait for the clearance bin, like this past week i bought painkiller and all of its expansions for $15.

Why don't we just treat it like how people sell WoW gold or PL services. You're not stealing a tangible object, you're stealing a service, a person or a team's "time".

Yeah I know its weak I'm just brainstorming here.

You're not stealing anything, people need to get over the concept of stealing, it simply doesn't apply, using it as a comparison to copyright infingement just muddies the waters and makes it harder for all the naive people to actually understand the situation.

As I said above it just leads to people making up stupid anologies about how its like stealing bread or cd's from a shop, we need to put a stop to all the misinformation.

You know what my problem is with pirating pc games is? My problem is when you fuck over devs that gives them another reason to not make the next one. This hurts our platform and in the end gives us less games. This reason imo is enough to keep me doing my part to support the industry and as such I buy all my games.

Lately though, I 've been getting more annoyed at some friends. A lot of people I know online are still stealing pc games. I'm getting pretty pissed for 2 reasons. For one, they know they are hurting the platform and yet continue to pirate, which blows my mind. Second, I'm starting to feel like a sucker, with the drm getting more retarded all the time, my spending hundreds of dollars out of my pocket and I seem to be in a minority of people who actually buy fucking games.

You know I reaaly could give 2 shits if people steal music. Yes it's a double standard, but I don't care, the music industry are a bunch of flithy rich pricks imo.

The pc platform is near and dear to me so I support it but I'm starting to have my devotion challenged. Should I just say screw it and steal like everyone else? I mean if the pc gaming ship is gonna sink then so be it right?

As for why people pirate....lol this makes me laugh. That's easy, you can't compete with free. If it's free and offers no negative consequence they will never stop doing it. The only way it would stop is if there was nothing left to steal because people are morons, simple.

Lets take music for example. I have purchased just as much music as the average joe, shelves are exploding with CDs et etc. But I have a 10,000 song library. Now, the RIAA would have you believe that I have therefore defrauded the industry $10,000 dollars. But lets look at this seriously, if pirating stuff didn't exist, would a student like me have spent 10 Gs on music? Of course not, I would have just bought the same number of CDs that I buy today, and would have FORGONE owning the vast majority of my collection.
same idea with videogames but on a smaller scale.

Let's not delude ourselves with the 'I wouldn't have anyway' logic thats been proven countless times on this forum to be invalid. You can prove how much money you spend on media in this world where piracy exists, however, you don't live in another world besides this one, so making claims about what you would do if you couldn't pirate is nothing more concrete than a weather forecast.

I would give a weather forecast more credit!!! lol :D

I love the people that feel the need to let us know theres a difference between theft and copyright infringement. Every time one of these threads pop up it's the same bullshit. As if making everyone understand the difference somehow changes
anything. Oh oh I get it now since it's not really theft, and only copyright infringement, It must mean it's not a big deal and I can comfort myself in that knowledge. Therefor, I will contine to go along my merry way and pirate some more.

Yet most of us use the weather forecast every day in our lives ;)

It's not been "proven" on this forum that I've ever seen, and I've been browsing the games section reguarly for many years now, maybe you can link me to where this proof is.

If the "proof" is that you cant determin accurately what you'd do under other cirumstances then that's not proof at all. It simply determins that you can never know for sure, not that it's impossible for that scenario to happen.

You can in fact easily demonstrate situations where it's impossible that in a series of pirated games that the downloader who commited copyright infingement does not earn enough money to pay for all of them. In which case you know for a fact that not all games are lost sales.

And in fact, by your own logic about not knowing alternate reality you could not say which of the games that person would have bought had they decided which to get, so you can't prove any one specific game is a lost sale.

jesus christ, I swear when I read your posts there is silly marching band music going off in my head simultaneously that almost drowns your post out. what in unholy hell are you trying to say thats relevant to my previous post?

I get the idea that your an idiot.

Sorry but I don't own "an idiot" maybe you're thinking of someone else?

Honestly I'm not trolling, why can you love people that defend piracy but I'm not allowed to love people like you? You're not unique if thats what you're thinking.

You think you're morally superiour, I get it, I just think its funny that you think that matters, especially when you're commenting on others for why they think piracy is OK.

For he who has to ask, no answer will suffice.

It's perfectly simple, you're saying the logic is flawed, I'm saying that it's not. I'll await your magic "it's been proven" link anyhow, you've got me interested now.

Ha, ok. Well if my supporting the platform I, (and so many others on this site) love by actually doing the right thing and, ZOMG buying my games, makes me morally superior then so be it. I will freely admit if the above statement is true then I am morally superior.........and yes I want a cookie.

As far as your commenting on my other point, I still stand by my orignal thought, you are an idiot. This shouldn't require any more explanation.

I support the platform, I have hundreds of legitimate games, I sink most of my disposable income into PC games. I just happen to think that pirating a few more past that isn't doing anyone any actual harm.

Translation:

I make a lot of money at my job but more is always nice so I rob 7/11's on the side here and there. I figure I do my part in society, and I don't actually hurt anyone in the process, so what's the big deal?
^^
I guess that's ok too right?
I mean, shit, since we're making up rules and laws and determing for ourselves what we ca and can't do, why not right?

Oh that's right, robing a store in the real world would actually take balls since you might get shot or arrested in the process.
Think I'll just go back to hiding behind my monitor and stealing without recourse. Much better that way, rrrrrrrright.

Wait, and you were the one questioning the need to describe the fundamental differences between copyright infringement and actual theft.
The irony is simply killing me.

Also the idea of 'I wouldn't have anyway' being proven invalid simply isn't true. Of course everyone always likes to think they know other people better than that person knows themselves. Again, I am not saying that everyone who uses the excuse is truthful, or even a significant majority for that matter, but simply that it can be the case, and I would argue it is the case for a certain percentage of players. Let me know if anyone ever gets any real statistics.
