Why do people not like VLC?

I got a ton of hate on the [H] awhile ago when I mentioned off-hand that I used VLC. I've never really had problems with the player. It is simple and plays virtually any file I throw at it.

What gives?

It's the only app I use for video, and sometimes audio; however for most of my audio needs i use foobar2000.

I like it, very much so but I still think that its IQ is a slight notch below that of other players. Maybe its just me tho..

Image quality isn't that great. And I don't like the way it shrinks back to the small form factor when the video finishes playing. For normal video I use realplayer, and for DVDs/Blu-ray I use PowerDVD.

You would use RealPlayer over VLC????

There is so much bloat with RP... *baffled*

I remember having to run 3 different spyware searches to clear out all the stuff that came with RP.

I don't dislike VLC aside from how ugly it is. KMPlayer is better looking, has a more logically constructed configuration system for tweaking, does everything else VLC can do, and has a completely borderless window option.

The last point is killer for me.

VLC is just fine. It actually has better video playback that MPC most of the time. Not really sure why, but I know if there is a format that MPC won't play smoothly, then I switch to VLC and all is well.

I had problems on a few videos where peoples faces etc where really jaggy. Even at 100% and not scaled

So I switched to MPC-HC (I actually install CCCP and use the included MPC-HC), and it works great.

But VLC is pretty nice apart from this one issue, and that was before version 1, so it's probably fixed anyway

I like VLC :) as for IQ, I think it might all be in peoples heads... I've never noticed a difference going from one [modern] player to another. The GUI isn't the prettiest, but I like that it's an all in one solution... no codec packs or anything else required, which is convenient for a portable media player (I use it on a flash drive).

Combined Community Codec Pack along with Media Player Classic is pretty much the same thing as VLC in terms of what it can play, and how easy it is to use. I have MPC with CCCP set as my default player because I have "heard" it uses less resources. I have both installed though, in case for some reason I have a issue with one, I can switch to the other.

By the way, if you have Win7, you don't need codec packs anymore. Either Windows Media Player or MPC-HC will play pretty much everything.

Get the latest version of MPC-HC from here; there's much newer versions there (currently up to 1549) than there is on MPC-HC's sourceforge page (currently 1249). There are 64-bit versions for Win7 64bit. I prefer MPC-HC simply because it's the best movie player interface I've come across.

The comments for VLC at videohelp raise some interesting points:

VLC player is better in Win7 than in WinXp because Win7 is much better at data transfer. But CPU Usage of MPC-Home Cinema is three times less than VLC player when playing HD Matroska files.

Great but the dvd playback is still broken in many ways. Sometimes menu buttons are unelectable, sometimes menus are broken and the skip over FBI warning feature can't be turned off.

There's a bunch of threads about this in the General Software forum, including this one:

why is this in the Display forums?

anyways, VLC is a disaster from a user interface standpoint.

I use VLC and MPC-HC. MPC-HC being the primary. It's interface is slightly more slick. VLC used to be pretty bad on the interface side, but it has improved.

Every once in a while you get a file that glitches one or the other, so it is nice to have a backup.

So I like VLC, I just like MPC-HC better.

I like it because it's portable and plays a lot of different file types. I used it more on XP than 7 for the reasons stated above, though.

I also liked GOM Player, and thought it had better IQ than VLC.

I primarily use VLC because of the built-in codecs and simple GUI; it's really what a video player should be. It doesn't handle everything though so I have MPC-HC on hand too.

it uses your cpu to play 1080p x264 videos and there is no way to change that.

with media player classic, you can make a few small tweaks and have it run 1080p off your graphics card, and depending on how good the gpu is, you can also have it run filters.

so you get lower cpu usage and better performance.

other than that, i use vlc.

now that they all had a long time to mature, can play almost everything, and have tons of options. It's just a matter of personal preference specially that they are all free and easy to download, install and use.

I mostly use GOM and MPC-HC, but VLC, ZOOM player. JetAudio, QuickTime and KMPlayer are always installed just in case. I set GOM as a default player for most video formats because it has a nice icons that displays the file type on the icon picture and it has the fastest and easiest video seeking. and use MPC-HC for playing movies because it can display the subtitles on the bottom black bar instead of the movie itself. and sometimes I use JetAudio for movies when there is a problem in the subtitle timing. when nothing can play some video file I open it with KMPlayer because this thing can sometimes play what all others cant for some reason.

and I have Nvidia DVD Player, for a fanboy related reasons :D
